I took my 50's era Marlin 336A out to the range yesterday to try out some 220 grain GC bullets cast in a NEI mold. 17 grains of H4227 delivered so-so results, but the group shot with 30 grains of 4320 punched this excellent group at 100 yards.

What did they say on the 'On Any Sunday' movie? "Neato!"

Is that mold # 166? I think I have that one.It says it is 232gr. but it sure looks like the same mold.

I didn't cast the bullets myself, so I'm just repeating what I was told as far as the mold. I did load the ammo and pull the trigger:Fire:

It would be nice to know what caliber we are talking about here. I would guess .35 Rem but I really don't know (that's the point of this comment).

By the way, NICE GROUP!

I agree.... outstanding!

I'm easy, though.... I'd have drunk to a much larger group, as well....

That is one fine group for 100yds with any bullet.
Being cast makes it even sweeter:-)

ive got a couple 35s and have probably taken more game using cast with them then any other rifle. theyve been neglected lately due to working with new guns but im going to have to take them out again soon. My grandsons allways pester me to take out one of them when we go to the range. 7 grains of unique and a 200 cast allways puts a smile on there faces. they think there shooting a mans gun and it recoils about like a 22! I allways chuckle at guys claiming mircro groves dont work with cast. Theyve obvoiulsy never had a marlin 35 at the range!!

Lloyd , I fool with all of Ranch Dogs moulds .

And I have tried them all in micro barrels with excellent results !!

Used the 30 caliber bullet in a 336 Zane Grey for silhouette this summer !!!

Shot the 35 cal 180 grain bullet in a 336ER (356 WIN) this summer with some one hole 3 shot groups !!!

Killed a deer this year with the 375 WIN using the RD 375-210 bullet and also have been having decent results with the 375-235 bullet on paper !!!

I the 44 cal I have tried all three moulds and each in a different 444 Marlin that is micro !! Had all three ready with different bullets for this season , just didn't kill enough to get to them !!!

And have finally shot the two 460 - 435 and 350 bulleys in a couple Marlin 1895's . The latest being a 1978 vintage micro rifle !!!

I used to be a doubter of micro and cast . But since starting to mess with the Ranch Dog variety of cast bullets I am a firm believer in micro and cast !!!!

Just to clarify, my 336A has a 1951 manufacture date and has Ballard rifling. My Marlin 375 and my 30-30 336 SRC both have micro-groove barrels. Hopefully I can get them to shoot half as good as my 35 Remington.

P.S. I just chronographed the load at 1500 fps.

Nice 336 35 Remington.

I've got one in a 1972 vintage.

Isn't that something? Makes you wonder why the 35 bore is so ostracized by the shooting public in general? And when you watch the effect on game, acts way beyond the data charts. And you don't have to accept recoil to get it either. Best kept secret in the shooting world.

4320 and RL15 just seem to work with any 35 from 200 grains right on up. Makes experts of us all.

It's a BassAckward caliber.. that's why-

I just bought 10lbs of RL15, and 8 pounds of 4227. Now I'm wishin' I put it all on RL15, but the 4227 shoots tight groups with my 45 colts and 320 WFN lead.. :Fire:

Pat you just hang on to that 4227 and you will find it a very useful powder for boolit shootin. From a hornet with max loads to a 458 with reduced loads there is a lota joy hiden in that jug. No dont drink it!

Yet another example of an extreme case of "shy bullet syndrome". They just don't want to get too far away from each other. Here's to hoping it's highly contagious! Great shooting.

Good on you! I've got the same rifle, a 336SC in 35 Rem, circa 1953 IIRC. Mine wears a peep sight. I have high hopes for it should I ever get the time to do any casting, loading and shooting.

BTW- Found an 1894 in 357 Mag yesterday. The wheels are turning.........

4227 Cocktail .. Yea- I like that powder.

Speaking of hornet, my buddy picked up a tang safety Ruger 77 in mint condition, 22 hornet for $250. Can you believe that? Scoped even and I worked up some loads with IMR 4227 and the thing was .5 moa.. :Fire:
