View Full Version : What alloy is this.

I was at a yard sale today and bought a lawn roller this was on it for extra weight. It melts at 580 deg F, Tests at 9 BHN. What do you think it is ?

I have seen Stanley Process stamped on babbitts, and United American Metals makes a few. I don't know of any babbitts that soft though.

Looking at this post it MAY be mostly lead with a little tin and antimony in it.

BHN of 9 is where wheel weights are at

40:1 30:1 and 20:1 are all in that area as well

Babbit is hard very hard

Boolit feed stock. Melt it, cast it, shoot it. 9 is darn near pure lead.

That is the problem with acquiring unknown metals. Many old foundries made lots of different alloys and did not ID them well at all. If I do not what it is, I just dump in the pot as (in your case) 9bhn lead.
