I asked about all the extra holes, and, naturally he bought it that way. I did not ask about the the 30-06 ID tag glued to the receiver.

With the custom work so obvious I'm sure the shop wanted MSRP of new gun plus 10% for the custom work. I'm sure he said "you can't find one like that just anywhere, it's a good deal"!

There's probably something even uglier under the "30-06" plate.

I too wonder what horrors await under that 30-06 plate. Perhaps an attempted engraving?

I am the "shop". A guy brought the rifle in and sold it to me.

I think that there should be or was, under the .30-06 plaque, a case head designating the caliber of the rifle.

Considering the fact that most "BUBBA`S" are cross eyed, those holes may actually aligned with his eyes?Robert

I just picture the scenario in my mind.
Drill.
"nope, crooked"
Drill.
"Mmmm a little better, but still off."
Drill.
"Oh jeez, I went the wrong way!"
Drill.
"What size hole did I need for that tap?"
Drill.
"Ok, I got the right bit, but I picked the wrong tap..."
Drill.
"Rats, I went waaaay to deep. Was that the bolt I got into?"
Drill.
"Darn it. crooked again. I'll just tell the guy iron sights are better."

All those holes are for a tacticool picatinney rail. You have to have a picatinney rail to be able to join the "Shooting Range Commandoes" organization.

You have seen them, they pull up in a vehicle, open the trunk, pull out a rifle with flashlights, laser sights, scopes, extra mags in pouches attached to butt stock, bipod, and extra handle grip under the fore end, and two mags tapped together in the rifle.

Two mags dumped into a target at 25 yards as fast as they can pull the trigger, rifle goes back in the trunk, they drive off.

You have just witnessed a member of the "SRC" in action!

Good morning
Hey you bought with full knowledge and probably paid the owner accordingly. My first question would be how does it shoot and function.
Not everyone out back some where has a drill press, guides, or even the best mechanical abilities.
But they get the job done and Charlie Mike. I grew up in a small town farm community where the average man was born and grew up just down the street learning to do for himself. He did not have the time or funds to seek out a machinest. Just Tuesday (21st) I helped a feller with a 10 pounder beat his 67 Ford front bumber back straight so the neighbor could weld some steel to it. Will not be pretty but it will still haul the everything needed to.
Maybe we ought to be a bit more ready to walk in another's shoes first for a while. Maybe Bubba broke the trail we so causually stroll down today.

There's one of these from the '50s in a LGS (742?) for $299 asking price but it's been there a while. Well used, but no abuse. No scope and looks like it never had one.

I've always been curious, how is it to reload for one of these? I know with a lot of autos, a guy has to be careful what pressure curve you load to in order not to damage it and make it function properly.

Can these function with cast?

I think the 740 and its successors are one of the reasons RCBS makes small base .30-06 sizing dies.

After failing to get any mounts to line up with the holes, including the mounts made for this rifle, I filled the holes that I could with screws. I dressed it all up with a file and JB Welded the whole mess. I'm waiting on it to harden and will start sandind/filing on it tomorrow.

The Pick Gnomes are getting into bubba gunsmithing! They sure steal a lot of picks and have several of mine. Seems they are trying to find new uses for them.

I had a 740 and a 742 in 30-06 at different times. No problems using a standard die set and full length sizing. They both liked slightly reduced loads rather than max. loads, with j-bullets. Never tried them with cast.

This gun should have a bolt that is different from the 740/742 guns. Supposed to be stronger I read.

We load cast for a sons 742, works rather well with Lee 170gr and a light load of H4895. I use standard lee 30-06 dies.
