Going to get the Ranch Dog mold at NOE, 350gr, and was wondering if its worth getting the GC base over the PB.

Loads will be 1300-1400 fps and was soft casted. Well as soft casted as I can run it.
For Mid West deer, shot out of Handi Rifle with 22" barrel.

I don't believe you need the Gc version unless you plan to up the speed and pressure to higher levels, of course you might change your mind later and want to up the loads alot to flatten trajectory.

In the spirit of "you only live once" why not just buy both??? Then you can load up both some thumpers that don't lead the bore and some shoulder relaxing (if that can ever be said about the .45-70) lighter loads.

I have the mold from Ranch Dog with the gc. I run them at just over 1800 fps in a Marlin Guide Gun. No sign of leading, and it flattens the trajectory so I have a 150 yard point blank range. The GC wouldn't be needed at the velocities you are talking about, but the trajectory if you happen on a longer shot is something to behold. The recoil is stout but I have never felt it while shooting a deer.

The Handi Rifle is light and will really thump your shoulder but the 45-70 is such a great cartridge you will probably get another gun for in that caliber. With that in mind I would get the gas check. I have several guns in that caliber and would not part with any including my T C Encore which is another light-weight.

You can shoot this G/C boolet without gas checks, it does not affect the accuracy at all. I also have this RD mold and the 300 gr version. You will get rid of the rest of your 45 70 molds. That .460 sure makes a difference. I shoot this out of a marlin guide gun and hold groups of 1.5" at 100yrds. That's good enough for me. Use the data that RD has. It is available just Google it.

What about a mold with one checked and one plain base? Or have someone machine the g.c. shank off ?

Depends on how retro you are, and how much damage your shoulder can take. If your next 45-70 is likely to be a trapdoor or roller don't bother to get the gas check mold. If your next one is going to be a stainless Marlin guide gun to take bear hunting in Alaska by all means get the gas check!

Actually, my one 45/70 is a Marlin Guide Gun.
Just picked up this Handi, cheap, and well I always have a special place in my heart for single shot H&Rs.

I might sound like an old geezer, but I just don't run bullets at full speed anymore. I think of a Skunk Works employee summed it up when he talked about the U2, "anyone can make a plane fly high and fast, but it takes talent to make it just strong enough and fast enough."

And I do see myself getting more 45/70s. :)

Also, anyone use the HP version of the mold?

I use an NOE 330gr HP GC. It's a 6 cavity, so it empties a pot pretty quick.
