sitting here finishing my coffee and about to go shovel some snow, I am wondering a few things. I have a 450 Marlin, and the 450 has some limited data with limited choices, now compared to the 45-70 there are a lot of loads(Yes yes I know 45-70 is a great gun vs the 450 but I got a deal on the JM stamped 450 trust me I will buy a 45-70gubment).My question is, can I just load the starting loads from a 45-70 for the 450 and work up? I know the case in the 450 is 9% smaller than the 45-70 but the 450 can handle so much more pressure, I am pretty certain this will be ok and I do not plan to go to the max here but wanted to bounce it off you guys, thanks!!

That's what I'd do, no need to go very fast with either round. I suspect the 450 loads are hotter than I'd care to go anyway.
Good luck with the snow, after a bit more coffee I think I better go mow the yard-for the 2nd time this year. :-(

I don't think the factory rounds would be much fun but a mild "trapdoor" or a little warmer handload isn't unpleasant to shoot...but no, 300 grns and up are hard to describe as "plinkers".

haha I wonder if 10gr of Unique will get a 300grn boolit down range?

Never tried it, had best results with Rx7. Had fair results with 2400, just never followed the pistol powder avenue very far.

I understand it was a bit tongue and cheek people say 10gr of Unique is the do all load for everything, anyway I will be working with 4895 and possibly 4350

To be quite honest I'll give the Unique rifle loads a try someday, just haven't had any on hand in years. I've done some exploring with Universal but not in the 45-70. 4895 and 4350 are a bit slower than the powders I've had good luck with but these days we use what we have, right?

there are just a few loads for 4895 and 4350 from what I can find, I have other rifle powders but I do have quite a lot of 4895 haha

I use 12.0grs Unique in my .45-70 H&R BC and a Lee 450gr RNFPPB bullet and it does fine as far as getting out of the barrel. Actually does fine on deer and hogs out to 100yds too, and probably beyond that if I was to figure out the drop. And recoil is so slight that it makes people giggle. So I wouldn't hesitate using 10gr Unique. I have actually tried going as low as 5.0grs Unique with the 450gr bullet, and it cleared the barrel fine, but accuracy suffered.

have any experience with 4350 in the 45-70? (may not work too slow)
10gr of unique is great fun in my 44mag lever, I can see how 12 or more would be fun in the 1895

Sorry, I don't think I have ever used any 4350. Also, be careful working up with Unique in that case. I am not at home right now so can't check my books, but want to say that the max load of Unique in the .45-70 (sorry, don't remember which level--trapdoor, 1895, or #1--this was a max for, so please be careful). I know it is safe in my H&R, and seals the case so there is no soot blown back on it, but don't remember the chrono info I got for it off the top of my head. It definitely isn't going very fast.

Unless you want to get serious and have the shoulder to do so, you probly don't need a powder much slower than 3031. It'll burn better in the pressure range that less than maximum loads live at.

I agree, and most likely I will not use up my precious Unique blasting it out of this cannon, I may never use the Unique and hold onto it in my little cave like Lord of the Rings.
I do have a pound of 4350 I want to try out but nevertheless it is just not the right powder for the job, but I have it and its in a nice little IMR can and just begs me to use it haha
I have a lot of 4895 and wanted to find a load with that and there is some data, there is data for 4350 too but it is just a few loads
Maybe I can trade the 4350 but I love it in the tin can LOL
That being said, I do have Varget, 4064, 8208, 4320 I can use for the 450

I think 4895 will come in handy when you decide to explore the upper limits of that cartridge.

I went on eVil bAy and bought a small boxfull of old Dupont and Hercules cans. Couldn't find any Hodgdon cans though. The new ones don't fit my shelves. Plus I don't like them (new ones). Gonna put the new powders in 'em and relabel them.

I'm going about it the other way, I'm looking for shelves 12" deep and about 12" high that will fit in my closet. Need to get my coffee canisters (boolit buckets) off my loading bench and the powder shelves are gridlocked.
