Anyone try shooting a hollow base bullet with smokeless?
I have a Lee mold, 405gr, that was sent to me awhile back
for my .45-70.
They sent wrong one, but I never bothered to send it back.
Shooting a Pedersoli sharps.
Anybody try this yet/before?
And what load?
Thanks

Well, I haven't yet but I just cast some up and plan to try them very soon in my Marlin 1895SS. I'm going to try them with Trail Boss and Universal.

Try this:

Yes that boolit does very well in both my Ruger #1 and my Marlin 95. 40 grains of 3031 is accurate and my shoulder was not interested in further exploration.

that boolit is going to be a great addition to your mold collection ... it is a dandy and has done great in everything I have loaded it in ... original Springfield Trapdoor ... Uberti Sharps long range ... browning BPCR ... Ruger #1 ... Marlin Cowboy ... Marlin SBL ... Shiloh Sharps 45-120 ... 458 Win Mag.

you will like the formentioned 40 grains of IMR 3031. 38 grains of the same 3031 powder under a 405 grain boolit is a factory like load.

report back with your luck with your 459-405-HB. I hope it treats you as well as mine does me.

In casting hollow base minies for my 500 S&W I prefer to use coww+tin to pure lead to make stronger skirts. To tell the truth that's what was in the pot and it seems to work.

The Lee hollow base is the most accurate boolit I've found in my Springfield Trapdoor. Mine drops at .461, just right for my trapdoor too.

+1 on historicfirearms post.

I use that mold for all of my original Trapdoors and enjoy good accuracy with it. I've used it over 5744 and 4759 smokeless powders as well as 2F blackpowder. I use a pretty soft alloy for the Trapdoors in case I decide to load 'em over BP. An SPG type lube works well with both BP and smokeless.

Wow!
I could have been using it then for the last 5 years!
I guess you never know what you got unless you ask.
I have a Pedersoli sharps and use 22.5 grs right now of 4759.
Shoots great at a hundred yards.
Cheers everyone, and I will post my findings.
Thanks!

rifle or handgun? I am looking at the Handi Rifle in 500 for just the same thing.

I've used that boolit out to 900 yards on steel targets at the LVSR range and on small anthills out on the High Lonely in Wyoming. It's a hoot to hit those ant hills a half a mile away and watch the dry summer dust blown up by the boolit blow away in the breeze. My favorite Trapdoor sight for such work surprisingly is not the Buffington sight, but the 1879 sight. While not as efficient for windage correction as the Buffington, it is more usable for my eyes.

I duplicate the velocity of the 45/70/405 Infantry load at 1,300 fps with smokeless and equal it with black powder using Wolf's techniques from his book on the Trapdoor.

Harry, my 500 S&W is a Handirifle Rifle. It has never been polluted with factory ammunition. I bought it because I wanted something to shoot a huge cast boolits at subsonic speeds. Where I hunt, I never get a shot over 35 yards even before my eyes got fuzzy. If you include the minies, round balls, and regular boolits there is a huge selection of 50 Cal goodies. My ideal boolits would kill instantly.at up to 50 yards and then drop to the ground. I want slow velocity and a big, deep hole and broken bones. Lee has a mini that is essentially a 50 Cal, 365 grain hollow base wadcutter that I have been playing with. Others on the site have mentioned the REAL slugs. The outfit is indeed a hoot and rock buster. Factory ammo is outrageously expensive but like lots of cartridges it's pennies to reload. One day I might try pieces of cut up 1/2 in rod. They should also shoot 1/2 1 shot groups.

Hi Guys!
Well just got back from the range.
I tried the hollow base, with 22.5 grs of IMR 4759.
I wish i was more computer literate to post pictures.
With my Pedersoli sharps, tang peep, and a Hadley eye cup
I sent 5 into a group at 100yds around an inch and quarter.
Day was over cast, a bit of wind.
I also pan lubed them with Mr. Harlows formula.
I didn't sort them by weight, just sized them and fired 'em off.
Thanks to EVERYONE! for your help and knowledge.
I will give updates every now and then on my progress!
Cheers
Sean

Wow! I'd say that your Sharps is decidedly in favor of that boolit. Nice shooting on your part too.
