Ok, I'm on my 35 whelen kick again.

Since I'm going Elk hunting (I hope) this fall, I've got a really good 200gr cast boolit load worked up and I'm planning on using it.

I was reminded that way back when I first got my Whelen how I wanted a Saeco 35. Basically a big brother to the RCBS 35-200, the saeco wts in about 225.

runfiverun, sent me some samples of his Saeco 35 and they shot GREAT! Ever since then I've wanted a mould.

But...Saeco 35's were really hard to find in 4 C and with a HP option too....

Anyone interested in a clone of a Saeco 35 from NOE. :)

Oh, I digress, the original question was going to be.

How much better is a 225gr boolit in a 35 whelen than a 200gr boolit in the rcbs 35-200 design?

I don't think the Elk will know the difference, but i wouldn't let a little thing like that keep me from getting another good 35 cal. mould:twisted:. Actually sounds like a good all around weight for North America and most anywhere else.
I just finished up all my load work with the 200 gr. NOE so i'm looking hard at the 358009. I have no real need for it, but it sure is a cool looking boolit. Hope you report on it if you get one.

Blamer I've been real happy with my Accurate molds 275 gr. It's quite a bit heavier than you were asking about but it really makes the Whelen shine. It's been burning up my WCC 860 with a 4198 kick in the pants. I'd send you a few samples if you like.

Even cooler with a HP.

loudenboomer, got a picture of that boolit?

I'll have to talk to NOE and see if I can get him a sample so he can post a drawing.

Every RCBS 200-35-FN I've seen dropped 210 grain bullets, including my own. Another 15 grains isn't going to make much difference.

I think you would be making a mistake to use hollow pointed cast bullets on game, particularly elk. The flat pointed RCBS bullets will do more damage deep inside, and probably exit the far side.

Take care, Tom

I think something around 250 grains or heavier is the way to go with the Whelen. Not much point in shooting a nominal 200 grain bullet when most any .30 cartridge will do that. I think Loudenboomer's 275 grain sounds about right, especially for something like Elk.

The Boolit is not wide in the meplat dept. but it feeds well and is kinda sexy when drilled with the forester HP tool.

Blammer--Swede Nelson has a 360318 35 cal 245g mould that is available as a 4c with HP and FN pins! What's not to like?

I haven't tried the HM2 235gr mould in my Whelen (yet), but it shoots lights out in my 357 max. Ruger #1.

You said the Saeco 35...did you mean the Saeco #352 ? If so, I had Tom at accurate molds make a clone. I'm getting great accuracy with them. http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=36-245S-D.png

If you want something in the 220gr range this bullet is accurate for me at 2200fps. http://www.accuratemolds.com/bullet_detail.php?bullet=36-230D-D.png

Yep. My thoughts too. You can get a safe accurate 2400 FPS with boolits of 275 grs. For hunting the big critters it may be counter productive going much lighter.
Paco Kelly's load of 62.5 gr. WW760 280 Lyman 2514fps/3930ft.lbs is powerful

My Pet Loads Accurate 275 GC
Full power:
My VZ-24 shoots 60 gr. H414 275gr GC 2" 100 yd. groups
9.3gr. 4198 Kicker and 51 gr. WCC 860 1.8" (Clean Burn)
Mild loads:
WCC 860 61 gr.Fed. 215 primer 2.1" (Slightly dirty)
AA 2230 41 gr. 1.5" 100 yd.group (Nice easy shooting load. Most accurate load tested. Accuracy went south if powder charge was increased)
All loads are 3 shot groups with 3 groups fired for average. I did not fire Paco's load. Fed. 210 primers were used exclusively except for the Fed 215 load listed. All my loads are safe in my rifle. As always work up slowly and cautiously.
I need a new chrono sorry for no velocity numbers on my loads.

How about the old 3589/358009? 280-290 grains ought to work for you. Shuz uses it all the time on elk./beagle

I seemed to have better penetration and accuracy with 240 to 250 grain bullets in MY 35 Whelen. On the other hand though, NO deer hit with a 205 grain 358315 boolit ever went very far on its own!

yea the saeco 352 is what I meant.

How about the RCBS 35 Special Order mold, 250 grains iirc?

Seems to me that if you can shoot 220 grains at 2400fps without needing to neck your .30-06 up at all, the main attraction to something like a .35 Whelan lies in the ability to throw slugs AT LEAST that heavy.

What kind of accuracy do you get with 220gr boolits at 2400fps out of an 06? Does yours have the standard 10" twist.

That's a beautiful mold! All the classic heavies in one mold! Any of those bullets should work great for your hunt.
