I stumbled onto using Goo Gone as a bore cleaner. I had installed a now cloth onto a pool table and had used this stuff to loosen the bond of the old contact cement. Lemme tell what, this stuff flat out removes carbon and powder residue from a barrel. The version I used is in a spritz bottle similar to that which Windex commonly comes and it smells like essential oil of sweet orange. Evan my dirty .22 rimfire cleaned to shinny sharply cut rifling with two patches of this. I wonder if my gun barrel is gonna dissolve now ;-)

If you happen to have it anyway, give it a try.

The only drawback I see is it can remove stock finish.
Oh, wait, so can all the good cleaners.
Never mind. ;)

Thanks for the tip.

Huh, I'll have to try that! I have a spray bottle and a jug of that stuff, I just hate the stench of it, it smells awful.

From what I can remember of that stuff, it is nothing more than just plain old naphtha with a trade name on it. Over 95% of it is the hydrocarbon so that is probably the naphtha.

A gallon of nap is a lot cheaper! You can get it at Lowe's and Home Depot.

From the MSDS it looks like it's mostly petroleum distillate with a little citrus oil to make it not stink as much. I bet we are just paying good money for naphtha that doesn't stink.

I'm all for stuff that doesn't stink. I have had some citrus cleaning products in the past that work really well.

Naphtha (lighter fluid) does not really smell. I use it every day.

If you want a flowery perfumey smell, add a drop or two of scented oil used in candle making!

I have been spritzing a little Goo Gone in my tumbler along with the walnut media to help keep the dust down and it does seem to speed up the cleaning process. After it goes for about an hour then I add the NuFinish and brass is nice and clean and bright after another hour or so. I'll have to try it on my bore, definitely smells better than Hoppe's No.9.

#9 is a smell you must train yourself to like. I still do not like it. It is like gasoline....penetrates your skin and you just cannot wash it off.

I agree, Hoppes #9 brings back a lot of memories. But I have my bench set up in our spare bedroom and the wife doesn't like the smell. This helps keep the peace.

Another one, here, that dislikes the smell of #9! I will only use it outdoors!! I prefer the bouquet of Shooter's Choice.

You guys want to talk about a terrific bore cleaner with a bad smell ?

Try turpentine. Excellent bore cleaner. Smells so bad, it makes me sick just thinking about it.

Hoppe's #9 is sweet perfume in comparison........
