I'm about to build myself a heavy bench for casting. What size and height have the experienced casters here come to like for their own benches? I'd like to make my bench in an efficient size. Thanks GWW

I lucked out when we bought our house. The garage came equipped with a 3 x 6 workbench inastalled. Just the right size. Added old kitchen cabinets when we remodeled our kitchen.

PID, hot plate, RCBS pot, lee 5 LB pot ( for spew remelting add hot metal back to RCBS Pot) a coffee can to hold all the tools (pliers, hex key set, lighter, wood handle for spew plate/handle tapping)
and towels to drop bullets on .. compact but works well

2'x8' and standard counter height. I'm not happy w/ the height. When I build one in the garage basement it will be at bar height so I can stand if I want to.

22" deep, 2" thick quartersawn white oak, 21' long. Just right for case prep, shotshell reloading, 3 presses, two furnaces and 3 lube sizers.
Casting and sizing bench has jr unistrut let in and all tools mount on 1" thick aluminum and slide left and right out of the way.

Here's mine. After 25 years' use, would not change it. I have to sit, so the big swivel chair is a nice touch. Bench is dedicated to boolits casting and sizing only. 48"x12"x22". There's a 2x4 under the top to support the sizers. The bench is 3/4" fiberboard with some 3/4"x1-1/2" trim supports under the shelf edges. 102886

Cast bench is 4 feet long and 30 inches deep. I wanted to keep it from being so deep that stuff got lost behind the pot. Mine is still almost too deep.

Not big enough I keep learning. Mostly cast at friends houses right now due to not having a decent garage. Loading bench is 2 2x10's screwed to simple 2x4 legs, just what was laying around.

My casting bench is 0 feet X 0 feet.

I have a propane tank to my right/ a turkey fryer almost between my legs, / a small endstand to my left that holds a manicurist fan, and either a 5gal bucket or towel padded recovery box beside that all sitting in a semi circle. Thats it...i could carry my casting setup wherever I want in one trip if the bucket was not 3/4 full of water.

You forgot the 1/2 sheet of plywood sous you don't ruin the floor.

I assume his floor is dirt.

My casting "bench" is my main workbench, or one corner of it. 36" x 5-6', but I only use about 12 inches of it. So, 3'x1'. Except I don't really need all 36" of width. I move the pot off the bench when I am done casting. it sits on a wood plank with handles and sits on a shelf with the rest of my power tools. sizing and lubing happens on the dedicated reloading bench that is 4'x2'. I also have walking around space there. That space doubles as soldering station when I clear it off and pull out the iron.

My floor is concrete....I simply am not as neat/tidy as others who may have learned me this method. I have a flat steel "ice scraper" and I know how to use it when I start tripping over lead colored stalagmites.

I have 2 8ft 2x12's on top of 4x4 legs with 2x6 bracing around the underside edge. I measured my height by standing up straight and figured the height I could work without bending over, I hate stupping over to work. I only use about 4ft of it when casting. I use a concrete step stone for anything hot. I built 1 bench to narrow about 18in and didn't like it, but over 2ft stuff could start getting away.

I have 2. One in the backyard shop is one of those standard HF benches they sell for $139. Not bad. Fairly sturdy. Quick & easy! No construction or cutting! Sitting on 2 4x4 oak beams to rais it up to my height.

My other one is in the main shop. I built it 8ft long 38in deep and ~38in off the floor (I am tall!) Top is four pieces of 3/4 MDF glued together and has 1x4 maple banding all around. Legs are 4x4" oak wth 4x6" feet connecting them. A sherman tank! I use it for lots of other things also. Has all the holes for hold-down clamps and vice attachments. A wood vise on each end.

I've had 3 casting benches over the years and all were about 2'x4' and a comfortable height for sitting. My most recent one is red oak veneered plywood with a cabinet quality finish on it. To protect the finish from heat and impact I insulated the counter top with a piece of 1/2" sheetrock. I placed a garage floor drip pan over the sheetrock. It's about 25"x47", galvanized steel and has a lip around it. Lead doesn't stick and boolits don't roll off- and it's inexpensive at about $11 at Wally World.
