Just slugged my 1896 Krag, measures .310, what would be a proper mold size? I am looking at Lee Molds, was planning on C309-200-1R but am wondering is I should go with the C312-185-1R and size down if needed. Other rifles slugged at .309, can I size a .312 boolet down for them? Thanks, Don

Dam555,

I'd go for the .312 diameter bullet and use it as sized with the rifle bore dimensions you are talking about. You should not have any problems sizing down to .309 as needed in other rifles.

My 1896 Krag Rifle has a bore of .309 but I use a .311 bullet as it will fit in the throat. My favorite bullet for the Krag is the Lyman 311285 - 220 Gr bullet. Works pretty good out to 600 yards. The Ogive (nose) diameter will play an important part also, .3015" works best in mine. Seat your bullet as far out as possible so as to engrave the nose and if possible the first band.

Have Fun,
