found an old box of 150gr btsp that were never gonna get used so i thought id try to make a plinkin load out of em. researched a bit and found people have done 16.5 unique with 150gr jacketed. made 15 rem 30 06 cases with 16.5 unique no filler reg large cci primer and sierra 150 btsp 3.155 oal.
sent 9 over chrony at 8yds or so, 3 muzle down to shift powder forward 3 muzzle up 3 treated as normal. suprised to find all were 1760-1777 fps most show little to no pressure signs on primer, exception bieng muzzle ups showed medium pressure, any input on that? . the remaining went into 60yd group of about 1.5 inch from bench. all in all thought it was sucsesfull testing consistent velocity, cheap to load and good enough for plinkin, medium game or youth load. any tips for loads like such or gripes/grievances? besides not bieng a cast boolit:kidding:

Anyone else have any experience with jacketed bullets at reduced velocities using pistol powders? About a hundred years ago I loaded some 173 gr. NM projectiles over some such powder and got good small game loads. The details have long since eluded me.

Age and alcohol are tough on the memory cells.

I've shot a lot of 123 - 125 gr pulled SKS/AK bullets and a few 147 M80 bullets in various .30/.31 cals loaded over Unique. Works fine as the OP notes.

I have found in the .270 and "06" that about 12gr of RedDot works fine for reduced "J" bullet loads with 100 - 150gr bullets.

Need to make some reduced loads for the practice sessions with a young hunting friend thos past Summer and could find the 100 - 110 gr. "J" bullets so used 150gr Rem. Corelocks which worked fine.

Have found that the Lyman cast bullet book gives a good place to start as many of the cast bullet loads are well below typical "J" bullet loads.

Just be careful how low you go. I stuck a 150gr. jacketed bullet backed by a light charge of Red Dot in the barrel of a Krag once upon a time. I think it was 5-6 grains, but 43 years is a long time to remember exactly.

Good info. I like Unique, and when it does not fill the case all the way, I add some pillow stuffing.

With pistol powders being so scarce today, I only use rifle powders in rifles. I mainly keep the fast stuff for pistols only.

I do load rifle loads (223/30) to use as 22lr's with either a few grains of Titegroup or other similar fast powders, but about the same as I use for a pistol load. They give me ~1200 fps and are fun to shoot with PC cast. And use Dacron fluf.

Age and alcohol are tough on the memory cells. So that's the reason for my C.R.S:2 drunk buddies:

A friend of mine bought a new rem 700 in 308, threaded barrel, he wanted to mess with subsonic. He wanted to use j bullets. They worked, just took more unique to get them down the barrel than a cast. 8.6gr was what we came up with running them over my chrony. I messed with some one day in my 30-30, see if J's would group better than the cast I was running. Subsonic again, cast 200gr only needed 6.3 gr of solo1000 to get 1050FPS, a J took 8.7 to get there. Never had a stuck one or any that didnt shoot right. Didnt group any better or worse than the cast I use. Cast are just alot cheaper to shoot.

May do some loading with J's as the rim of the 30/30 rim digs into the lead of the next one in the mag as you cycle the bolt, so means one at a time. J's I could put 3 in the mag.
