Hey guys...

I have been working on getting the lyman 375449 out to 2000 fps and i wonder if anybody has one of them fancy computer programs that could tell me how fast 28gr of 2400 is moving out of my 375 A-bolt....

I have no problem with accuracy using 4350, 4064, 3031, and many others, but just cant seem to get to 2000fps... Most of the development I have done with this rifle seems to top out at 1500 or less on this gun. I dont have access to 4895, 4198, 4759, 5744, or 4227....

The gun seems to like 2400 though, and prelim ladder tests are looking very promising at 28 grains with a couple nice groups at 100 yds... And recoil is manageable...

So can somebody help with some speed estimate please????

In my experience #2400 tracks fairly close to SR4759 in the medium bore. My guess only, is that you are around 1800-1850 fps. If it shoots well, I'd leave it alone.

Well, its all about energy and penetration... I am looking for something with enough energy to take out a cape buffalo with claws and teeth.. That is why I need a speed calc...

Quickload show 28gr alliant 2400 pushing a 265gr CB out of a 375449 mold gives about 1700 fps at 21kpsi. It shows 36gr to net 2000fps at 34kpsi. I specified 20" barrel. YMMV. That's a lot of 2400!

My very old lyman manual lists the following for the 375 H&H with the 375449;
41.0 3031 @1990, 46.0 @2440
49.0 4064 @ 1940 , 56.0 @ 2230
it also lists 4198,4320 & 4831 but you didn't mention those powders

Mine was in the 1800 fps with a very similar load.

I found that was about the max I cared to go with 2400. Try some RE7 to 4895 speed powder. 4895 will easily do 2200 fps.

Look at Castpics, great article there by Beagle on the 375.

It is an access thing, the closest of those powders would be a boat ride and 400 miles away. And no no shipping either. lol

Yea, i am good friends with castpics data, but very surprised on how little info there is with the 375449 on cast pics.... Not many loads anywhere with 2400.... My lyman 43 shows 2400 with 28 gr at 2195... But with recoil as managable as it was, i was suspect of the fps.... Sure shoots nice... Time to bump it up and check the results, i leave for the hunt a week from monday....

My Lyman manual was overly optimistic about velocities too. That is when a chronograph becomes your best friend.

I had some decent luck with 4895 in the 50 gr range, I think. It was around 2200 fps and recoil still was pretty bearable. Wait, shouldn't it be brown bearable?

Them brown bears make any recoil plumb easy like, the load work up is what hurts. lol

INDEED. when the hair stands up on every place that hair grows ... recoil is the very last thing a feller contemplates ... just ... oh my gosh ... hope this rifle has enough snoose to do this job ... and ... wish I liked fishing a LOT more!

then after its all over ... the ... where can I empty my colon ... thought ... er ... urge ...

Recoil in the field? It happens? Never noticed.

I will say that off the bench my 375 can be unpleasant to shoot with heavier loads. Offhand it isn't bad at all. I prefer heavy loads in the 375 that I do my Marlin. 45-70. Gun weight and stock design are a bunch of that.

Yea, i hear ya brtoj.... That has always been the downfall of the original A-bolt... Mine came with synthetic stock ( i thought it would weather better), and the stainless barrel ( who says stainless wont rust?)... Darn thing is just plain Light for big bore.... If it was a wood stock, i would have drilled it and added about 3 lbs of wet lead... But alas, it is plastic.... It makes for some heavy recoil.. A real hammer job... And as many rounds as I have shot lately, i can tell ya all about felt recoil, but it never bothers me when I am out hunting, just when I am on the range... But i gotta get this load thing with cast tied down.... I dont wanna be hunting at 100 yards... I wanna be hunting at between 150 and 200 yards, and need the energy to do it.... But I will do with whatever i have.... Its not me I am worried about, but my autistic son alaskanKid... He dont run fast...lol. He will be packing the 12g slug gun as backup, but isnt the most coordinated person... So i wanna give as much cushion as I can....

Then 4895 might be the way to go, or even 4064 with some Dacron. I don't think 2400 is a good way to get to 2000 fps.

My rifle is a CZ550 and light it is not. Probably goes 9 pounds. Nice soft recoil pad, excellent trigger. A joy to shoot.
