So I am looking at getting in to the casting fray. I found a guy that has pure lead left over from manufacturing processes. He is selling it for $.50/lb, is this a good deal? It is in 1mm thick sheets.

In addition to that, I have done quite a bit of research into the equipment needed, but not so much the alloys and mixing to get a desired BHN. I will be casting for a variety of pistol loads (.380, 9mm, 40S&W and 45acp). Which alloy or recipe would be ideal to mix in with this lead to get me where I need to be?

Thanks in advance, looking forward to being apart of this community.

Very good deal. See if you can get a discount for the lot. Order some COWW form vendor/member and you can probably mix 50/50 and add 2% tin.

Use plenty of flux (sawdust) so as not to lose the oxides from all that surface area.
$.50/lb for soft lead is indeed a good deal.

The price is the price he was offered at the scrap yard, so he decided to offer it up on another forum I'm on.

It could be an Apple shape. In any case, you got a good deal.

Buy ALL that you can and then trade some for coww. That is a very good price.

I am in a position like yours, but I have an excess if Linotype and little soft lead. If you were interested in Linotype we might be able to work out a swap.

We could probably work something out. Shoot me a message.

I would cast most it separately into ingots so that you can blend them as you cast your boolits. It's always nice to have some extra soft lead around for different things. Also once it is all mixed together you can't separate it. Kind of like baking. If you mix all your flour with the sugar and baking powder you can only make one thing. Keep it separate and you can make more things.

Get'em!
Their already easy to bend up to toss into the pot, and cast into ingot's.

Hopefully picking it up today. I'm going to try to buy all he has, should be in the neighborhood of 1300lbs.

I'll probably cast it into ingots and I'd be more than willing to sell and trade for other alloys.

I doubt it'll be open on Good Friday.

First thing I'd do is see how much they'd go for on EBAY

Yeah I need a gauge because I have several people interested when I cast them down to ingots, but I'm not sure what to charge.

I mean as is. There's bound to be a market for either the heart's or the cut out's.
