Interest in making holsters

I am getting the bug to make a couple of holsters. If anyone used to do leather working has some of the basic tools that aren't being used I would be interested in making a deal for them. Kevin

You can get by pretty basic and without any real harness making tooling. A razor knife with extra blades , Dremel tool with small drill bits 3/32 and smaller, sanding drum attachment , some spring clamps . Home Depot ,Walmart , Lowes or similar store.
http://www.tandyleatherfactory.com/en-usd/home/home.aspx usually has 7-8 oz skirting deal going on for double shoulders . You will need some contact rubber cement ,stitching cord(waxed nylon ), a few 3-0 egg eye blunt stitching needles ,groover with guide and a #6 stitching wheel.

Pretty basic to get a start.

It's really pretty basic. Tandy leather has a good book about it that has a bunch of patterns and whatnot in it. I would recommend buying it.

I have what you are looking for, but need it for a sheath in a couple weeks. Could do something after that. Would charge you for it, but a whole lot less than buying it new.

It can be simple, but depends on style and quality you are going for. Most work doesn't look right without a groover, edger, overstitch wheels, etc. Add dye(s), gum t, contact cement, a stamp or two, rivets and setting tool, snaps and setting tool...

I've done it both ways, making your own is dependent an having files or a Dremel, and my homebuilt don't have some of the fine details that the commercial ones do. The edgers are easy if you happen to have a small junk chisel, Dremel, and Cratex wheel on hand, not so easy if you don't...

This is my own pattern for the Small Frame Ruger Vaqueros in 45 Long Colt.
All my holsters are hand sewn.
The loop for the holster needed to be bigger to clear the bullets though. Boo Boo!

If I counted right without crossing my eyes I got a double row of 36 cartridges each for 72 rounds total !!!

Seems like small amount if your being attacked by a local tribe though. ;)

Mine are all 10 oz leather. Springfield uses 12 oz. I believe. I would have preferred 12 oz. because it retains its shape and longevity better.
The next scabbards I make will be 14 oz harness leather. Harness leather is packed with oils and wax to fend off rot and decay from horse sweat. Salt is the enemy to leather.
