With these two powders IMR4350 , H4831 with the lyman #311284 what is the warmest I can make the load without worry of harm to the M1 rifle. I know I'm not going to get the best accuracy at a maximum load but just want to know what the safety margin is that's all. I found out yesterday that old powder that I bought H 4831 worked very well. The M1 rifle absolutely love the stuff using bobs load 40gr and the lyman #311284.
My model 1917 also loved the load. But the hunting load I developed long ago for it is a little warmer with 44.1 IMR4350 around 2100fps the old rifle will make cloverleafs at 100 yards with this load.
Can I approach this velocity with the M1 safely with either powder. I'm very curious to see if the M1 will give me a decent group with a load approaching this velocity.
Thanks

Parashooter posted this some time ago on Jouster.com As you can see, he chose to stop at 2000fps, not because the charge had the potential to damage the op rod, but because it's usually about the max speed for 311284. The pressure at the gas port for the standard load with 4895 is 10587psi, so you can at least see, you have some room to go above the charges shown. Someone with quickload may be able to go on up for you.

Cartridge : .30-06 Spring.
Bullet : .308, 214, LYM LRN GC 311284
Cartridge O.A.L. L6: 3.340 inch or 84.84 mm
Barrel Length : 23.0 inch or 584.2 mm

Predicted Data for Indicated Charges of the Following Powders.

Matching Muzzle Velocity: 2000 fps or 609 m/s

These calculations refer to your specified settings in QuickLOAD 'Cartridge Dimensions' window.
C A U T I O N : any load listed can result in a powder charge that falls below minimum suggested
loads or exceeds maximum suggested loads as presented in current handloading manuals. Understand
that all of the listed powders can be unsuitable for the given combination of cartridge, bullet
and gun. Actual load order can vary, depending upon lot-to-lot powder and component variations.

Be very careful using slow powders in a M1 Garand, as you could end up with a bent op rod.
Garand rifles don't have a gas limiting system like M14s. If the port pressure is too high, the action works with excessive gusto and the op rod is the weak link in the system.
I don't think this will be an issue with light cast bullet loads, but if you try for higher velocities trouble awaits no matter if you are using cast or jacketed bullets.

Yes I know about the M1 with slow powders and j words. But with boolits I have come to understand it a whole different ballgame.

Thanks Got-R-Did I've thought about buying that exact gas plug for some time but I always ask myself why? Maybe it's time I just get it and see for myself?

I have one of the adjustable gas port plugs in my M1, works well, and you can "tune it" to what you are shooting.
