Ah, the benefit of getting sleep after a week and a half of 13 hour night shifts...
Went to check on the barrel prior to sending S&W a note. It does have some wear at both ends, but far less than I feared. It does have some wear marks, but would some brass shim really hurt S&W's bottom line? I still guess they stuck it into some sorta fixture to machine it.
Not bad enough to send back (and roll the dice). But EABCO, Virgin, and other second makers might be cheaper in the long run. My Dad is OK with it, works for me.
