I've got the exact same gun. You'd better do a chamber cast before you get started on anything. You're going to find that the gun has absolutely no throat at all, none. I took the gun to Turnbull and had them run their standard reamer in the gun and it took out almost a quarter inch! The gun would not even chamber a Hornady 350g flat point or round nose when I got it. After using the reamer it will do it with no problem. Miroku does this on all 45-70 guns. I bought a Win 1886 (Miroku) and had to have it reamed also. The guns shoot great and are well made. However, they are made to the original SAMMI spec which has virtually no throat in it at all.

thanks I had heard much of the same after I bought it. it is all ways that way with issues with tight specs. I have chambered and shot 300 gr meister rnfp , they lightly engrave and had normal leaver pressure to chamber. the boxes says 2000 ft per sec. they are hell on a milk jugs full of water. picked up a box of black hills 405grfpl,they just have the slightest engraving. I will need to shoot some before work and see how they do.

While I had it in to get the throat reamed out I had them do something else.

I use Lyman's old tried and true 457193 design (405 gr FNL) as my starting point for all 45-70 load development. This is the very same mould they included in their Centennial Model Set built around a specially built 45-70 Ruger #1 a few years ago... in fact, the mould I use is one of those very same ones and so marked. There may be better for some 45-70s but I doubt any design will do as consistently well in all 45-70s. FWIW, I've used it most in two rebarreled (one Numrich, one Green Mtn barrel) original high walls.
