My dad bought me 50 new RP 454 cases. I loaded 20 rounds with 300gr Jacketed Hollow point with a starting load of IMR 4227 and a Rem no. 6 1/2 bench rest small rifle primer. On my second cyclinder one case stuck and took a little force to get it to eject. The case was split from just about the rim to just below the case neck opening.

Any ideas? Out of the 20 this was the only on that showed anything. I weighed every powder charge so I they were the same and none of the rounds had any more recoil then the next one.

I suspect that peice of brass was made on Monday morning after the super bowl.

What did the primer look like?

If you have not had those problems with other cases, the new ones you got may just be brittle....

The only .454 brass I use is Freedom Arms (from stock I got with my first F.A.) and Starline. I have never had a case split in many thousands of rounds, in fact I have some lots of 50 that have been loaded 16 times.

It sounds like you got a bad case, hopefully only one.

These are the first 454 rounds I have shot in my SRH....just got it for Christmas. I do have a box of Hornady 454 ammo to shoot so I guess that will tell if it was the loads or just a brass problem. It sure does like 45 colt brass with a 260gr cast and 6.0gr of Trailboss.

Hoping it was that one case.

. . . . .

That comment made me recall emergency heart surgery. It was on a superbowl sunday and the only surgeons on duty were the geeks/nerds. Turned out well for me that the jock surgeons were off partying :-D Its been 11yrs now and keeps on tickin'

Had a box of 38 Spls and one split like that and I returned it to Rem. They analyzed it and determined it was caused by a bad forming die and send me a replacement box. As for reloading components ~ the nature of it (variable from rollin' our own) they probably wouldn't be as objective.
