I wanted to get the RCBS primer pocket swaging die, but Christmas/house bills said no. Is there a low cost/no cost way of doing this, with no power tools, and just Lee trimming equipment? Anyone got an RCBS swaging die they wanna get rid of cheap/trade for?
Thanks for any replies.

Back in ancient times, when I was shooting a lot of IHMSA, I formed about (500) 7TCU cases from LC72 5.56mm brass and used a (as I recall) 60-degree, 6-flute countersink mounted in a hand fixture home-made from a piece of 1 1/4" aluminum round stock to remove primer pocket crimps. Probably took longer to make up the tool than it did to deburr those primer pockets.

armoredman,
I use a Hornady primer pocket reamer head # 390750 in a small cordless drill. Takes maybe a second and does a great job for around 5 bucks. If you don't have a small drill , you can buy it with a handle and turn it by hand. I would think that would get old fast though. :Fire:

I used the Dillon pocket primer swager on all of my 5.56 bras. Decap, then swage and you will have no problems.

I was thinking of selling you my RCBS but don't think you can beat Lloyd Smale's offer.

+1 on the dillon BUT

I've done it with a small pen knife or utility knife. Just takes a light "twist" and they seat in fine. (I use my dillon for large batches though)

RCBS makes a military crimp remover for their power station. They run around $15 at Cabelas.
I bought one and removed the threaded shaft and replaced it with a cut off screw (if I remember correctly the threads were 10/32). Then I chucked in my cordless drill and zipped out cases so fast it almost scared me. It is adjustable for depth of cut so there is no way you can cut too deep.

You don't want the RCBS unit anyway... When swaging my .223, the center post was too slender and soft for the task, and quickly collapsed under the force necessary to actually swage the crimp out of the primer pocket.

I now use the RCBS PP swaging die, but years ago I used a Lee chamfering tool to remove the crimp on military brass. I was doing .308 brass, and I've never used it on small rifle primer pockets, but it might work.

The Lee tool is just barely too big.
I accepted the generous offer of the loan, thank you very much sir!
Thank you all for the helpful ideas and advice!

Im all caught up on my swadging so if anyone else needs to use this after armoredman is done just let me know and ill have him mail it to you when hes done. Its just one of those tools that is used once a year and then sits neglected. Ive got the large primer setup for it too if you have 308s you need to do.
