I have heard down the years that yes, it doesn't matter, the handles will fit both sizes. Now this hasn't been my experience at all. The small single cavity size fits them and them only and the double cavity size fits those only.
Until tonight. I noticed a small difference in a double set that I removed from a mould. I'd never noticed it before, but these handles were relieved or tapered out at the tips. Look at the pic.

See? Left hand set is for the older small single cavity, right hand is for double. It's the middle set that is different. I tried it on both and it works well for them.
I thought that maybe someone had modified them. I got to looking in my stash of handles though and I found another one just like it. I'm thinking that Lyman/Ideal made them at sometime or another.
