What is the aprox. max velocity for a 44 mag. cast boolit using WW without a gc? This is for a 7.5" barrel and powder is h110. The particilar boolit is from the lee six cav TL430-240-SWC micro-groove with lee liquid alox. Also, should this boolit be sized?
My 454 handles 2000 fps no prob WITH gc on ww.

Alloy, hardness, boolit to chamber throat to bore fit, and lube are all going to contribute to what velocity you can run.
Not being a .44 mag shooter, my GUESS would be 1400 or a little more with proper boolits.
Seems like I read something along those line associated with Elmer Keith.
Others on this forum will no for sure.

As Shiloh mentioned, there are a lot of variables here, not the least of which is the gun. guns are individuals, what mine like yours might not. I have loaded my 14" barreled 44 to 1645fps with a 250gr ww cast(water dropped), JPW lubed boolit. Although it was not the most accurate, it didn't lead.:drinks:

ok, sound reasonable to me. All I needed was an aproxamation.
Thanks guys.

Are these velocity expectations/parameters uniform throughout bore sizes? What I mean is will SRH .480 Ruger achieve similar velocity range with similar quality control of the revolver?

As others have started, there are lots of variables, but I have not been able to get velocity about 1,2000 fps in my 44 magnums without more leading than I like. I am refering to plain base wheel weight bulllets here. I can push the same bullets as fast as they can go without leading when using No. 2 alloy.

With ball powders like WC820 or 296 I can get 1550-1575 FPS out of my Super Blackhawk with mild leading. With hot burning flake powders like 2400, Blue Dot or Unique I get similar mild leading just above 1000 FPS and the leading's intolerable if I go to maximum power loads. Somebody was asking yesterday why gas checks are used on .44 Magnum boolits. That's why. But the cooler burning powders will let you get by without them.
