My standard load is a 325gr WFNGC bullet, but I spent a bit this morning casting the 325s and a 412 I shoot in the Ruger #1 and my Marlin, so for gee whizz factor, I sized and lubed up a handful to try in the 454. Trying to decide between H110 and 2400. Should be fun, haven't gone this heavy in the Freedom Arms, but it has been accurate with every load I have shot in it, from almost 45ACP velocities and 285gr SWC up to 340gr and max charges of H110. The 454 is my favorite caliber, more than enough for any all all North America has to offer with my 325gr bullet.

i vote H110 thats what my Encore 454 barrel likes but i think you would have more of a powder window with 2400

Greetings
A curious question... What twist does Freedom use in a .454 ?

1:24 if memory serves me correctly. I don't think this will be a regular thing, I get close to 40" of penetration from the 325gr bullet already.

Hopefully these will punch holes this afternoon.

Reading this thread made my wrists and knuckles hurt.

Any idea what velocity you are looking at achieving?

When I was developing a load for my 390/400gn (depending on alloy) boolit in the 454 I settled on 25gn H-110 for 1350 fps from a 6" barrel.
A customer for these boolits told me he brought some to one of the Linebaugh seminars and they shot them substancially faster but I don't recall what powder they used.
I should add that getting enough crimp to hold them from backing out of the case and locking up the revolver was quite an issue.

I am hoping for 1000fps, I really have no need for a bullet this heavy, Bullshop's 335gr WFNGC would go end to end in a Alaska Moose, and they were crazy accurate in my old Ruger 454. I don't worry about speed as much any more, it has to be accurate. These are 45/70 bullets from the 462420 mold I got from a group buy here.

Didn't work out so well, jumped crimp, and I think I was well over my velocity target.

what load did you try out

I used 18.5grs of 2400, extraction was a little sticky, and they were an absolute hammer. They hit to almost the same point of impact as the 325s.

you can also try 4198 or 4759. But H110 is probably your best bet. At this point you are running into cylinder length issues before you reach pressure limits. No reason it cant work though, though id be surprised if it worked in a 24 inch twist. Probably more like a 16 inch twist.

Might size and bell some with the expander button out of your dies to get more case tension. You can plainly see all the lube grooves through the brass on my .475 ammo, but they don't pull either. I have one of those GB molds, it makes a nice boolit.

I knew you had tried the big bullets in the 454, just couldn't remember the load. The 454 is a 1:24 twist, and I will say the bullets were not key holing, so I should be good. I will give H110 a try. The bullets are showing their lube grooves, picture just doesn't show it.
