Ok guys, i found this plate at an estate sale. it looks hand made and has a hammered appearance. it has a stamp on the back that says etain-pur. it is about 14 inches in diameter and pretty heavy. even if its a dud for pewter, it looks nice for the price lol. i can't figure out how to upload pics on here or i would show yall what it looks like. sorry.

Thanks shooter, guess i lucked out. this plate is double walled and it looks like the edges were folded over and soldered together. hmmm luv that solder lol

The solder used on pewter is the pewter itself. I don't have a picture of your item to look at, but double walled and soldered would be very unusual on a plate or tray. Much more common is to provide strength through a formed contour and a rolled edge. Like this tray:

My wife now tells me that my plate is a large charger. quite old and may be worth many times what i paid. if so, i can sell it and go buy 50/50 solder with cash left over! may have had a stroke of luck.

I would NOT melt that one down! It could be an antique worth some real money...........other that the few cent you will gain from melting it down for simple tin!!!!!

Do some serious research on the net. :coffeecom

Dunno guys... stuff look pretty pristine to be 'collectible'. Nice looking stuff though... Are there any marking on the items to show date, who made it...etc..etc.? This will tell the tale.

Nose Dive.

Cheap, Fast, Good. Kindly pick two.

The picture is of a Connecticut House Pewterers tea set that I melted a long time ago. There's no picture in the thread of the OPs (potentially) valuable collectable.

For the OP, in the reply box, hover your cursor over the 'square' picture looking thing at the tip, 3rd from the right. A selection box will come up, in the 'from computer' box, click select files, and then use it to search your computer for the image you want. It works, most of the time. You just have to remember when you stored that picture. '...Now where did I put that?!!??...' :D

Ok guys, the pewter plate i bought is really a charger. its about 14" diameter. its marked 1817 on front edge and says etain-pur on the back with a seemingly hand etched depiction of the achangel michael stsnding on a dragon with a spear in one hand and sheild with a cross on it. its aprimitive piece that weighs about 4.5 pounds. i can't find anything on the web on this piece. anyone seen something like this? double walled with a folded over edge that is soldered to back. i dint want to melt it until i find out what its worth in original form. thx

It should be worth FAR more as an antique than to simply send it flying out the end of a barrel!!!!!! I trust you are NOT that desperate for tin.

Melt down the NEW stuff...........not the antiques like you have!

Yeah banger, I'm extremely tin poor, but this charger will be sold so i can hit up jsizemore and buy about 15lbs of pewter ingots. I have a dislike to seeing pieces of history destroyed.
