I pulled the bullets from a few Mosin surplus rounds, measured the powder charge (50 grs), reduced it by 5 grs (10%), put the bullet back in. It really made a difference in the recoil (I fired single shot), and they were still very accurate.
Would crimping those surplus cases hurt a die in any way? I think the Mosin cases are made of cast iron or rhino bone.

I've done the same thing with my Lee FCD. Seems to work just fine

most of the milsurp 7,62x54r ammo I've seen is steel cased. The greenish ones can be lacquer coated the orang-ish ones are copper washed.

All the milsurp stuff is primed w/corrosive primers.

Any idea what the powder might be?

The powder doesn't compare exactly with anything you can buy, but for purposes of loading salvage pullsown, if you use ir with 4895 data in the .303 Brit., .308 Win. or .30-06, you will not get into any trouble. I have used lots of it.

I pulled the bullets in 10 more Mosin rounds and reduced the power charge from 50 gr to 45 gr. This time I crimped the cases with a 7.62x54 crimp die. Result - not much difference in recoil at all. Really not worth the effort. I don't know if I could reduce the charge 5 more grs, down to 40 gr or not. There was definitely less recoil without the crimp.
I also loaded up 20 rounds of 6.5x55 for the Swedish Mauser. 10 rds using 33 grs IMR 4064, 10 rds with 39 grs IMR 4064. The only bullets the store had were Nosler 100 grain spitzers. The cases were from factory ammo that I fired in this gun. I only have a collet die right now - the FL set should be here tomorrow. The problem is, I don't have a crimp die for these cartridges, so they loaded a little hard. Still, what a great gun to shoot with either 33 or 39grs. A bigger bullet might be better.
I'm still going to try the Red Dot in the Krag with the .309 bullets, and look for some .311 cast.

I pulled Czech silvertip rounds and reduced 10% for a friend to use hoping the reduced recoil would help his shooting....didn't work (for him) but the recoil was lighter, a small change in the grouping. I think I also reduced some yellow tip rounds (Hungarian? maybe) and didn't notice a recoil or grouping change. Until I worry about the pounding recoil, I won't bother changing any more.
