Sgraham3,

I've used IMR-4064 with the gas checked 160 grain Lyman 287641. IMHO, IMR-4064 is a bit slow to be using without a gas check. IMR-3031 might be a better choice. Your pet load may differ.

I hope this helps,

Thanks. I am new to casting and have be reloading only a short while. I have been loading jacketed with the 4064 and had very good luck. I have search all over and everybody seems to have different powders for this cast. Is the IMR-3031 good for other loads. I haven't seen it listed to often or recommended for mausers.

Sgraham3,
If you want to shoot non-gas checks boolits, read this article (Classic Sticky excerpt by C.E. Harris). Good information, and some general starting loads.

Also, you might look into IMR-4320 with Jacketed 7x57 loads. I've had great results.

I hope this helps,

Jacketed in my 7x57s gets WW760, CCI 250. Cast gets either 5.0 grs. Red dot, 18.0 grs. IMR 4227 or 24.0 grs. IMR 4198, CCI 200. No luck whatever when the GC is omitted!

You posted in the military rifle section so, you must have a 7x57 Military rifle ?? Before worrying about GC / no GC, you should take one of your "as cast" bullets and slug the throat of your rifle. I'll bet it mikes .287 +.
What is the "as cast" Dia. of your bullets ?

Sorry I should have gave the details when i posted.Yes the rifle is a 1908 Brazilian Mauser. The mold(7mm Soup Can 130 Grain) drops the cast at .286 and the rifle slugs at .285. barrel length is 21 inches with a 1:10 twist.

Comparing what you've had good luck with shooting jacketed bullets to cast bullets will take you down a dangerous road full of " pot - holes."

If you're going to shoot cast , you'll have to wipe the slate of your knowledge of jacketed and start all over. It is a new ball game now.

ie.....powders, bullet seating, case neck prep, velocity of your cast bullets, diameters, etc., etc.

A lot of things are going to be different.

Good Luck,

Ben
