I need a follower

The following pic shows two followers. The one on the left is from my Chilean Short Rifle. With it installed the rifle is a jam-o-matic. The follower on the right is from a friends vz-24(?). With this follower it feeds flawlessly.

I checked Gunparts Corp and came up empty. The Chilean appears to be all original with all matching #'s and no import stamp so I assume all parts are original.

Any ideas?

Buy a milsurp Mauser 98 follower, the same length as the vz-24 follower.

The one on the left is a dead ringer for a 95 Mauser. As stated above, the on right is a 98 Mauser follower. I bought a 98 Mauser follower on ebay a few years back. There's always somebody parting out a gun to sell as parts. You might be able to get one there.

I would WAG that the "too short for the M98 magazine well" M95 follower is tipping into the extra length/space, ergo also angling the cartridge(s) into a position that makes feeding problematic.

No expert here for sure but the problem-solution does look familiar. I see in the photo that the one that works is longer than than the one that doesn't. I've run into that with other "modified" bolt actions- where I tried all manner of "conventional wisdom" fixes- including reshaping follower, changing springs, changing spring angles, reshaping and polishing rails, polishing ramps...etc. One solution that worked was to change out the follower to one that fits the mag box.... especially LENGTH. I would have never thought of it as a first try and it didn't seem obvious... but through trial and error- bingo. May not work in your case but might be worth a try-- a follower that fits the mag box better especially in length.

For the record - This is an as-issued, un-modified, all matching numbers (mag well included) 1895 Chilean Short Rifle (Loewe Berlin).

Followers can be aggravating, and are one of the main culprits in feeding problems. You can lay two side by side and not see any difference, as it is so minute, but different they are. I used to have a dozen around to trade out in rifles to see which one worked best.

Google searches aren't difficult and there seems to be a bunch of VZ24 followers out there. They aren't expensive- so even if it doesn't work, not much risk. Took about 2 minutes to find this one on fleabay. it's even "buy it now".

1) Was your rifle converted to 308/7.62 NATO at one time?
If it were, the magazine was opened up at the cartridge shoulder for 308 to fit. Such is the case for Spanish M1916 -> FR-7 rifles. A conversion back to 7x57 will need to account for the magazine alterations.

2) Is your firing pin extended past the bolt face when you open the chamber?
This will also cause jams. The sear is suppose to catch on the trigger and stop hold the firing pin flush with the bolt face during chambering of a round. If you've added an aftermarket trigger, the distances might not be correct to the original design. Changing the trigger had a ripple effect.
