April 2014 Photo topic:
Molds, Moulds, and Moolds !!!

Got one that's unique ?
Or have you made a killer mod ?

This may not have been mentioned for a while, but this started as a "PHOTO" contest. So think about the lighting and composition and the staging of accoutrements.

Feel free to comment in this Submission thread.
Have fun,
Jon

I've posted this before, but it is one of my favs.
I like the lighting and I really like the reflection of the boolit in the ingot...I didn't even see that til it was on my laptop screen.

My Favorite, a Robert Applegate .512 435gr PB. I've cast 1000's of perfect bullets with it. I actually drove up to his place in Oregon to pick it up, in the summer of 2000 or 2001. I spent probably 3 hours picking his brain about molds, mold making, gunsmithing, machining, hunting and shooting. He's one of the nicest guys you'll ever meet.

Hollow base and hollow point wood filled bullet for .568 large calibre whitworth rifle.600grains to Joseph Whitworth specs.Lengthened by using a shorter base plug and cutting an extra canelure in the Lyman mould. The noses are drilled and fitted with 1/4" wood doweling as per whitworths specs for military trials against the P53 Enfield and the Lancaster oval bore rifles.

Said by some to be the finest mould ever made. :-)

When I caught the affliction, I was more interested in getting the handles that were on this mould. The mould blocks were just a bonus. I think I paid 30 or 35 bucks for them. At the time, I didn't realize what I had.

This is at 100 yards,I weighed the Powder Charges but did not weigh the bullets. It took most of my ammo to find the target. Some fine work required to bring the Rifle and Bullet up to scratch, since I drilled the noses by sight rather than to a stop.It is encouraging to see the bullets are hitting square on and not tumbling.

Hello Col4570,
What cartridge were you shooting in this picture?
If the 577 Snider, I took a regular hollowbase mould
and had it opened up to .600 from .577.
Shoots a whole lot better because it engages the rifling
better instead of skipping down the barrel.
http://britishmilitariaforums.yuku.com/topic/13093
I would say start with .595 and work up to .600 to ensure
the cartridges will chamber in your particular gun.

Hello skeettx,Th rifle is a large calibre Whitworth match rifle measuring .568 across the Hexagon Flats. It is a rarity in as much as only a few where produced. In my search for an original bullet design someone posted details of trials for this Rifle by the ordnance board, matched against the P53 Enfield and the Lancaster Oval bore Rifles. The ordnance people wanted the same Bullet for all designs that being the standard P53 Bullet powered by 70 grains of powder.this proved to be a failure since the bullet only performed well in the P53.Joseph Whitworth designed a Bullet to suit his rifle and it was a success but not acceptable to the ordnance of that day.Taking details from Whitworths design I have modified a Lyman Mould to give the Bullet the exact length, base cavity and nose cavity. The Nose cavity has a wooden Plug.My Bullet weighs near to Whitworths Bullet.I have cast another batch and drilled the noses more accurately. My Bullet just fits the barrel and expands into the hexagonal bore and hits nose on at 100 yards. My intention is to get her to shoot long range eventualy.
Regards.Colin.
