I made up a batch of 300 bullets today. These are the Lee 500 S&W bullet. They are weighed +- .5 grains with the batch of the left targeted at 458 and the batch on the right targeted of 460 grains. It took a bunch of time but the wind was blowing like crazy and nothing else to do. Ron

How are you going to shoot them? Paper patch? What diameter are they?

I paper patch them and size them to .501 This has been my go to bullet for years in my Muzzleloaders.

idahoron, I have a rem 700-50 with a 1-28 twist, do you think they would be as accurate as a sabot?

i want idaho ron to answer also but he may not be retired as i am. as for me yes yes yes. with alot more power. you can turn that gun into the same or more powerful as a sharps 50/90 straight. a 500 to 550 grain bullet with 80 to 100 grains of blackhorn 209 powder or 120 grains of real black and you can understand what that bullet can do. alaska here we come. tell ron or i the exact top of the lands bore diam and we can tell you where to go from their.

YES!!!!!

This rifle is a 50 with the Lyman peep sights. These pictures are actually a friend of mine. His rifle shoots them as well as any of my rifles do. Paper patching the Lee 500 S&W with 9# onion skin and sizing them dry to .501 will give you a bullet that will fit and shoot awesome.
The thing about the paper patched Lee 500 S&W bullet is POWER and I only use 80 grains of pyrodex P. For several years I never found a bullet. I shot and have seen a ton of game killed with these bullets and never found a bullet. Finally last year I had a cow elk quartering to me at 60 yards. I shot her in the point of the shoulder and crushed her shoulder. I found the bullet in the hip. She went down in seconds.

How hard is it to handle the paper-patched bullets in the field?

I've been asked to work up a load for my dad to haul to CO this fall to chase elk with. I'm very tempted to try paper-patching, but *really* like the dirt-simple aspect of shooting PowerBelts or Hornady FPBs. My dad is a great shot, but he's not a tinkerer, not really a shooter; I don't want to complicate things for him if paper-patching is going to require any special handling of his bullets. I have 30+ of the 350-grain Hornady FPBs and it seems easy enough to just let him use those.

I carry my extra bullets in a tube with 1/2" inside diameter. They are no harder to handle than a sabot. When I run them through the sizer dry the sizer presses the paper on well. You would not be able to just stick them in your pocket because the paper would come off. In a tube like I use I have never had the paper come off. Ron

I am sold on it. Where can you get #9 onion paper? How many wraps do you do and is there a template for cutting the paper? This would work assume for my fall elk hunt and should give me the time to work up a good load. Thanks for a the info.

Did you read the sticky? the link to the paper is in it. It is from the company called the paper mill store.
You do two wraps and I made my template. Ron

These wouldn't work in a 1-48" twist would they?

Idahoron; I read everything in the stickies and I have a question. With the flat-base bullets, you end up with a twist of paper at the base. You leave that knot of paper there and just shove the bullet through the Lee sizer that way? Pushing that wad of paper into the bullet base? No problem?

Also, what part of Idaho? Those pics don't look like the Panhandle where I hang out. You must be in the State of Southern Idaho, where the clocks are wrong.

I leave the twisted tail on the base. After I run them through the sizer they are pretty much flat. The tail shows no problem with the bullets at all that I have seen.
I am in the Southern Part around Twin Falls. Ron

I don't think the 1-48 twist is going to work with these bullets. They do work in a 1-32 twist. Ron

Thanks, Ron. Yeah all my ML rifles are 48" and longer twist, but I've thought about getting something with a fast twist barrel. Mainly I wanted to understand your process, and now I think I got it. Good stuff to know. I will have to try the pistol powder though, as others have tried it with good results, and see if I can get my conicals to shoot well at 100 or more. Thanks again.
