I went to a gun/reloading store looking for a good powder to load 9's & 40's they were all out and he gave me a substitute telling me this will work for both
what he gave me is Hodgdon LongShot which I noticed when I got home is shot gun powder. Will this work like he said it would? I don't want to load anything then have it go BOOM on me. A helpful answer is appreciated.

Check a manual for proper loads. Don't just rely on hearsay.

Lee Modern Reloading Second Edition shows 9MM load data for 125 grain lead boolits.

I did find some jacketed bullet data using LongShot for 40 S&W, but not a lot.

Thank you I did look in my Hodgdon 2014 Annual reloading book and it showed the same. Thanks again

Remember......MOST powders we use are actually shotgun shell powders! It is nice powder makers list (at least they used to!) pistol load data. Some are not providing that in updated lists.

I use it in my 40 loads, 45 loads, 44 mag, 357 mag, It is a little sooty at the low end of the scale but it gives good velocities with somewhat lower pressure. I can't help with the 9 Mill.
I wont quote any loads, Hodgons data center would be the place I would also look to for data.

I swear that I am a hapless victim of geography... I've had Longshot for my 28 gauge on backorder for 6 months... and that is ALL your store had?!?!?!?

from Hodgdon’s website

LONGSHOT®
LONGSHOT™
This spherical powder is the most versatile shotshell heavy field propellant Hodgdon has ever produced. Great loads in 10 ga., 12 ga., 16 ga., 20 ga., and 28 ga. are shown in Hodgdon’s Reloading Data Center. This propellant provides true magnum velocities with superb patterns. In addition, LONGSHOT is the best choice for those competitors shooting games such as "Buddy", "Annie Oakleys" and more. LONGSHOT is the high velocity pistol choice in 38 Super, 40 S&W, and 357 SIG at lower than usual operating pressures. Available in 1 lb., 4 lb. & 8 lb. containers.

I've never used it, but it does sound ideal for 9mm and 40

Hodgdon does list loading data for several calibers using this powder. http://www.hodgdonreloading.com/data/pistol should get you to 9mm, then its easy sailing after that.

Hodgdon LongShot is my absolute favorite for .40 S&W, especially the 180gr bullets. It has a lower pressure than most powders which adds a little more safety. Definitely my goto powder for 147gr 9mm. Another huge advantage is that it allows you to seat the bullets deeper in the case. This feature is extremely helpful when loading 'personal protection" ammo which is generally hollow points.
