I have a batch of AA-1680, and some 800-X and would like to try them in some reduced loads in the Hornet. Has anybody here ventured into that realm with these two powders? Bullets are 45 and 55 gr. lead RN's. I see load data for 1680 for full strength Hornets but nothing for cast loads.

Thanks in advance.

Try 4.1@1,400 fps to 4.8 gr @1,600 fps of 231 powder with 55 gr boolets with std pistol primers chroned with 10" barrel. shot from a 10"and 14" contender, super accurate!!!

AA1680 is my go to powder for full strength Hornet loads with cast boolits but the accuracy drops off with smaller charges. I use 4 to 41/2 gr Unique or 2.7 Bullseye for reduced loads. Just my experience with my guns YMMV.

I had wonderful results with PB. Don't remember the load (about a middle ground load...didn't want damage Hunters Pistol targets), but the boolit was a 55gr FMJ that shot sub MOA at 100 yards. Nothing else I tried came close to PB.

BRRRRR ! Dang Winter !

I'm working on subsonic 22 H loads with those two boolits (like your Lymans, I presume)using 700x. My next trials will be at the 2.0, 1.8, and 1.6 levels for both boolits, CCI 500 primers. The previous loadings were just above these levels and sonic, with good accuracy at 100 yards.

Awaiting warmer weather and calm winds. The goal is subsonic, very quiet, loads for 25-40 yard squirrels, figuring 100 yard subsonic accuracy will offer even better at the lesser distances. 1680 is a great powder for HV jacketed loadings with accuracy.

I picked 700x as a powder because in going subsonic by reducing charges it would be required to Reduce powder weight and BE/red Dot type loads would offer very little room for fractional reduction.

Several years ago, I wanted a cleaner burning powder than H4227 in my .22 Hornet. American Select had just came out and claimed to be very clean burning. No rifle data...but I worked up low and slow..don't have my notes, but it seemed to be in the 2.0gr range. I do remember pressures went up fast with very little increase in charge..to the point groups became patterns. I got some nice groups..but lots of fliers..even though the Hornet case is small..I think those tiny charges got lost in there. I was using the older Lyman 225415 @45grs.

Yeah, I've been using Bullseye, Clays, Universal Clays, Unique, and 2400 for my reduced loads, with enough success to make me happy. (Bullets being 225438 and 225415, both old-style, and the Lee Bator. 8½" twist barrel.) It's just that I have unopened containers of 1680 and 800-X and want to try them out. Figured if someone's been down that road with those two powders it would save some wheel re-inventing!

Looks like I have to open my can of PB now too. Never thought of that one! Alas no 700-X here, Baron. Ditto American Select.

I used 6.5 gr of Win 680, chrono'd at 1498 fps using Oehler 35p using 225415 out of a 14" TC. Was able to hit 4" clays at 100 yard all day long.
It meters well from a powder measure
