Good morning,

I load for a 445 SM, but at 1700+fps they are hardly mild. Since 44 mag and 44 special will fit this chamber, have you tried those? Both easy to keep under 1000fps.

I had one of these for a while... I never loaded it with lead, but loaded it with j-words.... I used h110, but the gun didn't last long on my bench, just too large and un-gainly... I traded it off.... It shot nice though, but just too big to carry on your chest day in and out... For me. Sure was purty though....

Greetings
I shoot the 414 SM and I agree with RJW on using the "base" case for reduced loads.
Unique will work OK but I found it is far easier to load a 265 grainer at 900 FPS in a 41 Mag case than using the 1.6 inch long SM cases.
But if you do not mind some other steps start with 8 grains Unique, add a cereal box wad, fill case with COW to be slightly compressed by boolit base and ignite. Then work up in half grain increments till desired fps is found.
It just is far easier to plop the same load of Unique in a 41 mag case without the wad and COW and have fun.

I had a beautiful 7445 Dan Wesson. I used W680 for full power loads, then AA1680 when W680 was discontinued. Had a mold that dropped a boolit that weighed around 350gr in WW, shot around 1,600fps in that revolver. For light loads we loaded 44mag and special.

I often shoot a 7445 Dan Wesson Supermag.

Full house 445 Supermag ammunition is a handful, even with the longer 8 & 10 inch barrel assemblies. However, standard 44 Magnum 240 grain or lighter fodder is quite pleasant to shoot through such a heavy revolver and so is 44 Special.

Many do not realize that the .445 Supermag cartridge is just a stretched .429 caliber 44 cartridge that's 1.600 long - Compare at 1.290 length for the 44 Magnum, and 1.160 for the 44 Special.

I blame the 445 cartridge name for most of the caliber confusion. The 445 Supermag has nothing to do with .45 caliber even though it sounds like it should. I've seen a fair amount of confusion generated around this cartridge.

As others have said rather than downloading the larger capacity 445 case, instead use the shorter 44 Magnum or 44 Special cases for your milder shooting since the 445 Supermag will readily accept the shorter cases.

The only negative to shooting the shorter cartridges is you may get a carbon ring lower in the cylinder. If you clean the cylinder after shooting it becomes a non-issue.

The other negative is the bu(oo)lit bouncing around in the chamber (and gas cutting) until it hits the rear of the chamber mouths. They seem to shoot well enough, I'VE HEARD though.

I don't shoot plink loads in my ten inch Dan Wesson thats what my black hawk is for . top loads for my DW is lots of AA1680 and XTP 300 gr loaded long .....

Ditto. Or the 340 grain cast at 1500 fps.

my dw 445 will shoot the 44 special and 44 mag cases just fine in fact the 44 mag cases are pretty dang accurate.
anyway I just use 9.3 grs of unique in the 445 cases with the 429241 for regular ole plinking loads.
it's the exact same load I use in my 44 mag, I just back the seater and powder funnel dies out.
