Anyone ever shot Black Powder in a 38-55 and a 250 or 300 grain bullet?
I'm just curious what velocity would be out of a 26 inch barrel?

1200 fps using 42 gr Goex 2FG, .060 poly wad & 250 gr Lee Boolit (20:1) in 24" barrel

Same exact speed & point of aim using 16.3 gr 5744 & same 250 gr Lee Boolit (no wad) in 24" barrel

BP slightly more accurate but both loads best I've gotten

Duke ... I have shot a bit of blackpowder thru my Marlin 26 inched barreled model '1893' 38-55. I find it to shoot great and the accuracy stays pretty good with it. I have also shot duplex loads in the old Marlin. they do very well with no fouling worries at all.

while back I decided to try to get 55 grains compressed in the 38-55 case ... winchester ... and I got er did with putting half the powder in the case ... 27.5 grains 2F GOEX ... then compressing this fully first ... then added the other 27.5 and finished the compression so I could seat my 250 RCBS boolit. these really shot nice and they were almost as clean as the duplexed 40 to 46 grain loads I usually load in these cases with. the 38-55 does well with the blackpowder and another hint I will pass along;

if you build a rope "pull thru" rod ... you can put a swab on the end and PULL it thru the bore on a lever from the breech a couple times and then clean the regular way from the muzzle with the hard rod. this way you PULL out the main fouling from the bore instead of PUSHING it back into the action ... this is especially nice and handy with the Winchester rifles which are a little more "needy" with the time and finesse to strip em and be able to get at the breech with a hard rod.
