View Full Version : Advice on optical sight for .357 Blackhawk

I have a .357 New Model Blackhawk that I would like to put an optical sight on. This is not a carry gun, I don't expect to holster it. I don't want to add much more weight or bulk. I don't want or need magnification, I once had a Ruger .22 auto pistol with a Bushnell scope and while it was a nice rig the magnification just made my wiggles worse.

I'm thinking of a red dot of some type, either reflex or tube, that could be mounted on a Weaver style rail. I already have a piece of rail that would work with a little modification and I can do all the necessary drilling and tapping.

Any recommendations of brands and/or models?

Try this on your gun. Adjustable dot size, can withstand the recoil of the 44mag or 45-70 (I've had it on both, and affordable). No parallax either while most of them have some or a lot.

I have the Fastfire III that I like a lot. Very nice optics, clear dot. I like the rain hood that comes with it.

Just my 2 cents here Perfesser but I really like the UltraDot. I bought the one with the 4moa dot and it's a dandy. If I have any complaints it's that they can be hard to use in low light situations. I don't even have the little screw on thingy installed (to darken the view) and there is some kind of tint on the lens that makes it a bit hard to see in the cover I hunt. But in most situations it works fine. The 4moa dot covers a lot more than one might think. At 75yds. it puddy much covers a paper plate on the brighter settings. Using the lower setting avoids some of that. Audie the Oldfart. P.S. Good to see you back!!

The only thing I didn't like about the UltraDot on a handgun is that it's as big as the gun. Kinda like holding onto a shoebox and pulling a trigger. Yeah, I've tried it all at one time or another. UltraDot is a very well made sight, just too big for a revolver. Looks and works better on an automatic.

Go with the Fast Fire III. I filed the bottom of a Weaver #46 base, D&T'd the top strap and the sight fits low and solid. The sight comes off easy enough if necessary in the field and the iron is there ready to use.

These are very nice. I also have a mini Eotech that would work quite well.

Larry, what you show is about what I would like to end up with. Thanks for showing mount alone also. Looks like everybody likes the FFIII, and I really like the minimal bulk compared to a tube type optic.

Thanks for all the responses from everybody.

I have the leupold delta point on a 1911 45 and a c-mor sts on a 10mm 1911, both are good sights the cmor is easier to adjust and change battery. I also have the ultra dot on a BFR 500 JRH its a great sight and the easiest to adjust. tks ken

Ordered the FF III and mount a few days ago from Midway; it arrived today. It will be a while before I can get into shop but I'll have everything ready when I can.

Might do a step-by-step photo article and post it here when I do. Thanks again for all the input.
