Good afternoon all. I'm looking to do some smokeless reloading for my Shiloh sharps in 40-65. I use unique in a 38-55 Rolling Block as well as a 45-70 Trapdoor. I don't see any published loads for unique in 40-65 nor anything on the web. I am imagining somewhere in the 9-13 gr range would work well for a 410 gr lyman 410663 boolit. Any input would be greatly appreciated.

I understand the whole little bit of fast powder in big case could equal detonation argument but don't think the above charge would be an issue.

My preference is to use a powder for which published data are available (4198, 4895, 4227, etc.)? BigTed's advice will get you there too.

I use 11g Unique under a 300g lead bullet in 45-60 with a 3/4" square of single ply toilet tissue to hold powder against primer. Very light recoil and super accurate.

I shot a lot of Unique in mine but don't remember the load now. Start at 10 and work up and you should be fine. I used the 350gr RCBS boolit.

Stay away from the long heavy bullets with Unique. I used 12 grains of Unique and got very hard impacted leading just ahead of the chamber.

21-22 grains of SR4759 is much better and more accurate.

Thanks all for the replies!! I'd love to use 4759 as it was my go to powder. I am waning myself off of it because when they discontinue it I will just end up having to find another new load for it.

I am experimenting right now with 41 mag bullets sized 408 in my c.sharps 40/65. They weight @ 210 gr. I started with 8 gr. up to 12 gr. So far 12 grains is best, so I am going 12-14-16-18 next week, If I remember, I will let you know results. using Unique.

I use 15 grains of Unique behind a 300 grain bullet in my 45-70 with good results and no leading. When I acquired my 40-64 for whatever reason I started using 18 grains of 4759 with equal results.

let 'em discontinue and hoard all the smokeless they like - gimme black powder for my roller and sharps, as it was in the beginning and ever shall be. 8-)

for smokeless and 19th century replicas that can handle the nitro, it's hard to beat aa5744 and sr4759 - those are the top powders for the top long distance smokeless shooters. dang it all! use that 4759! :)
