View Full Version : How "big" do Accurate Molds drop out?

Hello everybody,
I want to order an Accurate Mold for my .40 S&W.

The groove dia of the barrel is barely more than .400" and so, a little less than .401".
So I´m not sure, if I should go for a mold with .401" or .402".

What is your experience?
Do the Accu molds drop out just the right dia., rather a little bit bigger or even smaller?

I will use an alloy close to Lyman#2.

Help would be great!

When you order a mold, the band dimension you specify is the minimum tolerance, and bullets may drop up to 0.002" greater than that. If you want bullets to drop to a desired diameter without requiring them to be sized, specify your mold -0.001 from your target diameter, so that your target diameter is then at the mean of tolerance limits.

When you specify "precisely" the alloy you use and the size you want them to drop. Tom will likely make you a mold that will drop that exact size, depending on your technique and your alloy temperature control.

He did that with mine. sorry no photos of actual boolits :(

I specified .412 with COWW...and that's what this mold produces.

As JonB indicates just tell Tom the exact alloy you use and the size you want them to drop ! He will do the rest. :)
You may want to tell him your casting technique as well (ladle vs. bottom pour, temp., pressure cast, etc.)

Drop him an email before you place your order !

I would specify 402 since they may shoot better anyway in a '401' bbl. If not, you can size the 402's down to 401.
Tom's molds do drop precise (and round) bullets. I ordered a 410 bullet and when lubed in a 410 sizing die. you can barely see the sizing marks. Tom does great work and ditto on the suggestions above. Just let Tom know what alloy you will be using and he will do the rest.

His tolerance is +.0015" -.0000". So I specified .359" with WW on my last mold from him. Drops around .3605".

Before you do anything, discover the diameter of the chamber at the front.

I regretfully only have one of Tom's molds. I spec'd .459 with WW, and it cast .459-.4593.

It is a beautiful mold, and I couldn't be happier.
