Some interesting first hand comment on the effect of shooting a fouled muzzle loading Enfield rifle, and on the effectiveness of long range volley fire on artillery crews during the Indian Mutiny (http://researchpressuk.wordpress.com/2014/03/23/indian-mutiny-long-shots/) (1857-59).

I know you couldn't do that with an M-4!

This kind of makes me wonder if they had used this tactic in some of the other battles fought with the Enfield if the outcome of that battle may have had some very different results.

This was common practice for the Brits for many decades. With the SMLE, they used the entire formation shooting and one of their best calling the range and what sight setting to use. They were effective in the Crimean war,

Good morning
Interesting historical read.
A 500 grain lead projectile moving at any velocity above 500 fps will cause serious bodily harm on most soft tissue breathing man or animal. Any dought as to effective "thumping" range one only has to consider Billy Dixon's mile plus shot on the assembled group of "hostiles" at Apache wells. If contact can be made the target is going to get hurt badly.

I believe that the British and other European armies often practised "firing into the brown" or volley firing at extreme range into massed enemies. (see Rudyard Kipling's stories of the British Raj.)
