I'm thinking I would like to have a light, trim 9mm for knocking around at the lease. Something with a single column magazine, an external hammer, and that would work well with cast bullets. This would be mostly for small game. Any suggestions?

Sounds like you are looking for a 1911 commander in 9mm

Older model S&W Model 39. Might even find a Walther P-38 cheap.

I agree with the above 1911s are a lot more fun and accurate in 9 mm than I expected. I got a RIA 22 tcm and while waiting for ammo and dies I shot a bunch of 9mm rounds through it. I also have a P38 and it would work for that. My Sig 938 is my slim and trim go to carry pistol, but I don't know that I could hit small game with it. My Cz P01 is acuurate enough for small game and pretty trim and doesn't pull my pants down like all steel pistols try to. All of the above do fine with cast.

Go for it! A bunch to choose from. Ria would be hard to beat.

Post War Walther P1 or a Star B series.

My woods pistol is the FEG Copy of the Browning High Power. Very accurate for the work of popping pests around the neighborhood.

I'll be the weirdo here and suggest an aluminum-framed 1911 in .45 ACP.

Any of the models of CZ will do nicely. You won't out shoot them.

That's actually what I carry around the farm.

This is what I have come to like. The only time it has misfed is with the Lee 105 SWC. It has eaten everything else. It is really accurate and it is light. The double action is heavy, but I carry it cocked and locked just like a 1911. The way it is suppose to be. http://www.budsgunshop.com/catalog/product_info.php/products_id/88391

If lightweight and singlestack are deciding factors, standard steel framed 1911's are out. Depending on budget and preference of frame materials and action. I'd suggest a sig 225/p6 or 239. The springfield xds 4.0" would fit the bill too. A lightweight 9mm 1911 of decent quality is easily gonna run $1k+. For me, a 4" barrel is shortest I'd go for anything other than self defense(also minimum barrel length for legal hunting handgun here in TN). I tried to do this but me and SA/da guns don't get along, the p6 got sold., I'm a 1911 guy at heart. I do all my outdoor bumming with a full size 1911 in 45 with cast 200gr medium loads(870fps +). Deer season and I switch to 4 5/8" blackhawk in 45 colt with cast 260gr Keith style boolits at about 950fps. Best of luck in your search for the "perfect gun", I'm still looking.

I generally tote a M19 S&W 4" but I wound up with a ton of 9mm cases on hand. I figure all these cases are a good excuse for another pistol! I had a 3904 some time back and let it get away. The P-38/P1 might be the thing to get or maybe a P6.

Check out EAA (European American Arms) They have several very good quality CZ clones in he $350 range. Excellent guns for the money. Great feel and handle cast well. I've put well over a thousand with mine without a misfire.

Since you specifically asked about 9mm, I would recommend any fullsized model of your choosing with adjustable sights. Examples: 1911, BHP, CZ-75 varient of some sort.

If specifically small game, consider a 22. A Ruger 22-45 Lite would get my overall nod.

If wanting a woods gun for protection against 2/4 legged critters Glock in 10mm, wither G20SF or 4th Gen G20.

My answer to your question would be a Colt LW 9mm Commander because mine already had some cosmetic issues when I got it. If it acquired another in the woods I would not get upset.
