the girls have a cake decorating thing this weekend , they will use much of a large bucket of butter flavored crisco , but i can have the rest when they are done

is there any reason not to use it on a cap and ball revolver

No reason at all not to use free revolver grease, unless ya got a bear or two to fry up in a cast iron skillet.
If it seems to be a little on the "thin" side you can melt it with a bit of beeswax to "thicken" it up.

i did save all my deer tallow it has a nice high melting temp and mixed 3 parts tallow to 1 part bees wax makes a good patch lube , it is in the freezer i haven't rendered it yet still working on the last batch of that lube that is a few years old, i also have a bunch of lard from 2 pigs to get rendered but the wife will want that for soap, and about 8 pounds beef fat drained off burger saved up

but no bear

Good, adding salt would not be good.

And Crisco is high in trans-fats, which could lead to heart disease in your gun.

I think tortillas might be better than bread , easier to punch out with a sharpened 45 case , the bread would fall apart when it dried out , but the tortillas get tough

My oldest son, when he started competing with a muzzleloading shotgun would always ask for butter flavored crisco because it smelled like popcorn poping when he shot. It workd well he won a few adult matchs shooting as a junior.

Back in the late 1990's Wayne Schwartz brought a nice .32-40 rifle to our Schuetzen match..bore was pitted by using butter flavored crisco. It seems they had ran out of reg. crisco & his wife had replaced it with the then new butter flavor.he was shooting smokeless so the stuff must had had sodium of some kind in it.

citric acid is the last ingredient , maybe that is an issue if your not cleaning very day

If you are using it for lube over the balls it will be fine. If it has little salt in it your barrel won't know the difference. Black powder is made of 75% KNO3 witch is a form of salt. I would not use it after cleaning you will end up with a sticky rusty mess. Ask me how i know.

Pete,
I remember a guy that was shooting cap&ball in a cowboy action match and he used cream of wheat as a filler and margarine over the balls. He said "With the rotten egg smell of the black powder and the butter and grits, every time I touch this thing off I can smell breakfast cookin'!".

Speaking of deer tallow, I rendered a bunch from some fat does and found that a 50/50 mix with beeswax makes a great lube for my bullet sizer that works well for both BP and smokeless rounds. It is stiff enough to not melt in warm weather and does not "sweat" oil onto the surface over time. The 3:1 mix is about right for over ball lube. I've used 50/50 beeswax and olive oil for that in warm weather and 1:3 beeswax and olive oil in cooler weather.

I have used it for over thirty years, it seems to make cleanup easier.

So you could use it to clean brass, too, right?

Here's a reason not - it would cause a shortage of butter flavored Crisco which would drive up the price of my cornbread recipe. DON'T MESS WITH MY CORNBREAD...

I'd be concerned about the size of the tongue on the dogs nearby. You might go to shoot and have no lube.

this is Wisconsin we have plenty of REAL butter to put on corn bread , actually I think butter flavor Crisco might actually be illegal here still but it is unenforced in the past 20 years. yes butter laws prohibited margarine or other fake butter substitutes from competing with butter , they could not be sold colored or flavored like butter , or displayed in the same case

part of the reason I got a can of Crisco is that no one in the family eats it , if we are frosting a cake for our selves we just use butter to make the frosting , Crisco you could season cast iron with , or feed a muzzle loader with but not many other uses in this house

Crisco isn't food it is soap making lard alternative

You can use the Crisco to act as a lube for drilling and/or tapping holes. It absorbs heat and melts and works as a great lube. Make sure to label the can as "DO NOT COOK" or similar!
