Gooooood shootin! I think you like that old classic! I've been thinking hard about one for quite some time with the idea of playing with black powder and smokeless loads in it. Things like this make me think even harder about it.

If you are scoping the .45-70 and using full power loads, you might want to up the quality of the base and scope a bit to handle the recoil. I thought I'd put a scope on just for load development once, and one shot and it died. 8(

I agree with tacklebury.

I used four 8 x 40 screws to hold my scout mount scope for my 22 inch H&R 45-70.

Just buy the H&R 1 piece base. It's fantastic and solid. I run a 4X Burriss on my 45-70.

The only thing keeping me from buying one right now is the fact that I have a wedding to get past in 10 days (youngest son). Once that is done and I pay off some of that expense, I will be investing on one of these poor examples of a buffalo gun. After all, I already have the dies, brass, primers, powder, bullet molds and a number of already built custom rounds.....I should go ahead and get the gun to shoot them in.

And BTW, Jim....I blame YOU.

I told my wife it was your fault. She made some grumbling noise deep in her throat and mumbled something about "hunting that so-and-so down...". Last I saw, she was headed out the door with the bloodhound.

I really need to give my BC a trigger job, tang site, and finish the recoil pad install. I wasnt super impressed with mine and shelved it for this summer's project. Seeing groups like this give me the itch however.................

congrats - that's really some great shooting!

the bc is definitely a capable s/s rifle, and i tricked mine out with a mercury tube in the stock, a doubled kick killer butt pad, and a smith ladder rear peep sight.

i don't see a need to hone the trigger, and the word is that after a short while it'll smooth out, and i can attest to that. some folks "work the trigger" by cocking and releasing while easing the hammer down, others puff in some graphite (just a little) and dry fire with a dummy round.

i should add - with regards to the handi triggers, i've been told the sintered metal is thinly hardened, and taking off too much metal will quickly ruin that part and require a replacement! be careful!

i haven't cast lead for it yet, using commercial penn and lazer bullets, but i have all the right molds including the 535grn lyman postell and the lee 405hb and will begin casting as the weather gets better.

i may go black with it, but for now i'm loading aa5744 and getting some decent results at 100 yards. i love the .45-70!

Hi there RFD!
Good to see you around these parts too. This is where most of the interesting talk is happening, that OTHER forum has gotten too stuffy!

I thought that rifle looked familiar....

I really wish you guys would stop praising the Buffalo Classic. Its no longer a matter of maybe some day. It is now, when. A beautiful Buffalo Classic follows me home. With my gunshow strategy of sell high buy low nearly always being flip-flopped. I can now blame Jim Flinchbaugh for getting this started and Norbade's photography skills for robbing the piggy bank. I can assure you that immediately following the "oh no not another" lecture I will hold you accountable and seek revenge. If guilt feelings don't keep you guys from sleeping tonight. I hope you have vivid reoccurring dreams of a roll in the hay with Nancy Pelosi.

Leg pulling and BS aside. A few months ago I watched a shooter at the range with the simple version. A H&R single shot with a short barrel. He was about 3 or 4 lanes down and what looked like either 45/70 or possibly 444 Marlin. Although he was only shooting 50 yards with what looked to be a Red Dot scope. The young looking shooter was printing some pretty tight shot groups.

Thanks for posting that!! Four inches of eye relief for a cheapie is a pretty good deal. Seems like all scopes claim to be shockproof. The ad says lifetime warranty to the original owner. My guess is, it is really shockproof if they are willing to back it up with a lifetime warranty.

Saw one about 5 or 6 weeks ago listed locally on Backpage.com. The ad read something like, like new shot less than one box asking $275.00. The "asking" part really got my attention. I called immediately and was told "I just gave a caller directions", telling me he'd call back if he didn't sell it. I waited very impatiently for about an hour, phone never rang. When I called back as you figured it was gone along with the ammo and brass.

From Walter Laich---"Very nice group--at my age wish I could still see out to 100 yards"

Always reminds me of the John Wayne line from Big Jake when his son shoots the mule deer with a scoped rifle and his son offers to let him shoot (was his real life son too) - " Hell I cant even see that far!"

And this thread is killing me. I recently traded for a h&r handi in 45-70 and absolultly having a blast working up cast loads for it......BUT the BC is calling my name...........

Just looking at Buds again. They have the H&R in 444Marlin and 35Whelen for about $200. Seems like a good deal with the free shipping then send the action into H&R to get fitted with the longer 45-70 barrel. Buy the forestock later on. I'm trying to figure out a need for a 35Whelen.
