With powders being a bit hard to get i have been thinking of using up
What is some surplus to me 4227 in my plinking ammo instead of my red dot
Or unique .

But i do not have any data for this except for some full tilt ruger only level loads .
So i used some commen sense with regards to burn rate and case capacity along with
Useable and safe pressure for the revolver i am using .

I would like some input on what i came up with before i try it .... think of it as a double and triple check.for safety

Revolver... uberti cattleman .45 lc
Boolit is the lee 255 grain rnfp
Powder ...imr 4227
Starting load of 17 grains with a max load of 19 grains

This should be a nice safe conservative load in my revolver
And i suspect a very dirty load with the powder and lower pressure

Opinions very welcome ...

My old Pacific manual gives 20.0 gr of 4227 as the max load for the 250 gr. cast bullet. It does not give a lower load or recommended load.

I have fired several thousand 45 Colt load with 240 to 260 grain cast bullet over 20 grains of 4227. It is an excellent load and not stressful on handguns.

I was pretty confident that i was in the right ballpark but with no data to work off of
A second opinion sure helps .

If I'm remembering right, 17.7 was Petty's "pet load" for the SAA's. And you are right, there's going to be a lot of kernels left (not really an issue in a revolver, but a PAIN with a lever, mine flips 'em into my face if I'm not careful.....)

I just tried out 17 grains in my uberti .
A nice pleasant low recoil load ... dirty as heck .
But they do shoot pretty good .. just as well as my red dot and unique loads
They dont quite shoot to the same point of aim .. a little low and left
But still close enough to make me happy for plinking ammo with a fixed sigjt revolver
