This isn't a factory rifle. However I thought some of you might like to see the rifle.

I built this rifle for a friend of mine about 10 yrs. ago.

Here is a link to a slide show showing the precision fit of everything :

http://smg.photobucket.com/user/haysb/slideshow/Argentine%201909%207%20X%2057%20mm

My friend Nick has a pace maker now and his Dr. says all his rifles that generate more recoil than a .223 Rem. must go.

This 7 X 57 mm is a real nail driver. I have shot it quite a bit. It has a 1909 German Argentine 98 Mauser Action with detachable magazine latch in the trigger guard. I figured that I better grab this one before someone else did !

I did all the glass bedding, stock shaping , inletting, and finishing.

Tell me what you think ? This one didn't come cheap, but it is one more fine rifle.

Very nice Ben! Pics, and rifle. Sounds like your friend Nick forgot to tell them to put the pacemaker on the opposite side from his shooting shoulder.
I hope you enjoy it for years to come.

Wow very nice. I see you understand the schnaebel concept!

Having done my share of inletting I was a little taken aback at your precision. Really. That is like the metal and wood grew around each other. Something you just do not see these days without opening your wallet really, really wide. That is one of the nicest inletting and shaping jobs I have ever seen. I am swallowing a large lump of humble as I browse the pics in your link.

Beautiful rifle. You don't see that kind of craftsmanship very often. I'm sure your friend will be happy that this rifle is in the hands of his close friend who will appreciate it.

Tell you what I think?

I think 24 grains of H4985 under a boolit in a 7x57 case doesn't recoil more than a 223 at all...... :)

If the finish is oil and not poly, consider sending it here:

John Reese is awesome at checkering and he can do a 22LPI multi point for a very fair price. I have used him a alot.

Yeeahh, well……Ole' Ben ain't half bad with a checkering tool himself. The man does some amazing stock work. Ben sending a stock out to be worked on would be like an ASE certified mechanic paying someone to change a fan belt.

Just went to Ben's website, and you are certainly right! Top notch professional work. Indeed, I may be using Ben's services this summer! I love the schnaebel tip.

No I did not.

I confine my efforts to wood only.
No metal work of any kind.

A few of you wanted to see how the rifle shoots.
I took the rifle to the range today and fired about 30 - 40 rounds of cast through it.
I'm happy.

I've just got to jump in here and say that that rifle is fantastic to look at and obviously it is fantastic to shoot as well. I love the classic stock work. Nice job as always Ben. I hate to hear your friend is having to liquidate some of his prize rifles. I am glad you are there Ben to give a loving home to some of them.

When I realized my friend Nick was going to sell the rifle and knowing the 120 + shop hours of labor that I had in this particular rifle, I couldn't stand to see it leave. I knew that it was built RIGHT ! I knew that If I did buy it, I knew exactly what I was getting as I had fired the rifle many times prior to his decision to sell the rifle. It was going to be a no surprises deal.

Glad ( NO - - VERY GLAD ) to see it come home.

A beautiful example of a trim 7mm mauser. I would cheerfully take it to the woods and slay a enough deer to fill a couple pickup trucks.

This one would be a good " keep - sake " for him when I'm dead and gone.

I dare say, with your obvious involvement in his life the odds are better than fair. To my eye something trim and handy like that begs for a 2-7X or fixed 4X leupold.

I can't argue that logic.

Once home with the rifle, I looked through my " extra " scopes and found this one to put on the rifle temporarily just to get to the range and do a bit of shooting.

Yes, this one that is on the rifle right now is a bit gaudy for a rifle that has " classic lines " like this 7 X 57 mm has .......I agree, a nice little 2 X 7 var. or a fixed 6 X would be nice I think.

It's a shame I used to have a flawless fixed 6X steel weaver that I sold as a "Ken benefit Auction" It would have been perfectly suited to the task at hand.

Not quite as 'classic' as your beautiful piece Ben, but I hope it'll shoot as well with Pb. Working on similar loads to yours for a Brazilian '98 Mauser I've bubbaed.
