Does henry still make their youth model? I don't see it listed on their website, and was interested in the specs for a grandson. Who beside cricket makes a small rifle? I was at the lgs today looking and they had a cricket 22mag, I didn't even know they existed.

A friend bought one last year. The only difference between it and the standard 16" barreled carbine is it has the standard lever instead of the big loop and the buttstock is 1" shorter. My friend was not even going to look at it when the guy told him it was a youth model. My buddy is 5'1" and it was perfect for him. Great little guns, I have the standard 16" carbine myself.

Needing something smaller to get him started. I see savage makes a small one, but I haven't had a chance to check one out.

I have seen a Rugger 10/22 in a youth model. Short stock and 16" barrel. You could always find a standard stock and barrel when he is older. There are many stocks and barrels from people who modify the 10/22.

I am not crazy about starting him on a semi, but have given some thought to getting a henry with an extra stock and cutting one down. Actually a single shot will be fine, I just don't like the pull the bolt back for cocking for smaller kids.

Unless some 22 LR starts appearing around here at normal prices its going to be a BB gun summer for the grandkids.

I had the Savage Cub for several years, it is a great size for young kids. It's the regular bolt action just has the short barrel and short stock. My seven year old brother could shoot it quite well!

The Youth is listed on the Henry site at http://www.henryrepeating.com/rifle-lever-youth.cfm

Looks like Gunbroker has a bunch listed for sale too.

Thanks 357 I had looked, but not found it. It may be called a youth gun, but looking at the specs, it is for bigger kids or small adults actually.

I started my boys on the Savage Rascals. Cheap, easy to operate and come with peep sights. I know they will outgrow them, but for the price, I will throw them in the safe for future grandkids. If price is not an issue, check out the Browning Micro Midas. Great light little gun with the short throw lever (I have a set of these for my boys as well.)

http://www.chipmunkrifles.com/. I started my grand children with a chipmunk rifle. Worked out very good.

Not at all, just too much recoil for me. lol It is to start my grandson out and he is pretty small. One inch difference between their standard and their youth is not exactly for starting small kids.
I started my kids on a chipmunk, it is just hard for little kids to cock the chipmunk, The size and weight is perfect though.

I called up Henry and got a factory seconds stock and cut that. I am saving the original for when the kids get bigger.
