Shot these 50 yard groups today using my Remington 700 VS chambered in 308 Winchester. Used the Lyman 314299 (linotype) with 25gr. of Accurate 5744 powder. I seated bullets long so that they would just fit in Remington magazine and engrave rifling when chambered. I also tried lower velocity 12gr. TinStar loads...this bulky powder is capable of more velocity. Next i will try shooting 100 yards and using a Chroni just to see how hard i can push this Tin Star powder.

BTW 20gr. of Alliant 2400 did verywell also...among other powders Dupont 4895, Varget. All powders did good with this fat bullet 314299.

Barrel scrubed with 0000 steel wool wrapped around bronze bore brush before shooting to remove old copper fouling and polish the bore.;-) No leading after 80 rounds using LBT Soft Blue lube. Barrel was getting hot.

Best 5 shot groups using bipod.

Why lino???? Waste of alloy. Lets see 100 yds. 50 yds is easy.

I have shot lots of 100 yard groups with this rifle using jacketed bullets. This was my first time using cast in this rifle, so i just wanted to make sure i was on paper @ 50 (sighting in scope). The 314299 bullet is very consistant shooter if i do my part, all groups were not much larger. I was using a Tasco 24 power target scope with target dot retical...this higher powered scope helps lots.

I have lots of Linotype that should last me a lifetime and it will cast a smaller rifle boolit very easy without much fuss.

I've tested Tin Star extensively. It is made "bulky" and is intended for revolver cartridges. Suggest you don't push it too far above where you're at. It's burning rate is between Bullseye and Unique so it is a fast burning powder.

Thanks for the tips on Tin Star. I use 2400 for my 30-30 and 32WS plinker loads but it looks like Tin Star is worth a look, always looking for ways to reduce powder expense.

I also tested 13gr RedDot powder with the FATTER Lee 160gr SKS bullet (C.E. Harris design). These bullets shot verywell sized to .311. Cases fireformed to chamber nicely with this 1600fps load. Red Dot is a very quick burner powder, allmost as quick as Bullseye.

Nice work Detox... did you recently acquire the 314299?

If so please post as-cast driving band and nose diameters.

Thank you,
MJ

Nice shooting!! What did you size the 314299 to?

I only have sized linotype bullets to measure (linotype shrinks less when cool). Using a .311 Lee sizer my 314299 measures .3115 @ bands and .3027 bore ride section. The bore ride section of sized 90361 Lee bullet on left tapers from .305 to .3114 at bands.

Hornaday gas checks fit the 314299 verygood.

Hornaday checks must be flared to fit over shank of the Lee bullet (not good)

Thanks... that nose diameter will probably work in my '06 if I don't cast them too hard.

Did you recently acquire the 314299? Is there a manufacture date stamped on it?

Mould is brand new with manufacture date of 1/31/2014. As cast with Linotype, bullets weigh 190grs, drive bands measure .3125" and nose ride measures .3027"

Lyman moulds will rust very easily, so oil your mould as soon as you are finished casting. I use Kroil or Rem oil to prevent rust.
