About a dozen years ago I had a custom 50-70 made up on a 10 inch contender.
I was all excited about the project. Shot it a few times with Goex FF. No one could shoot it with out putting a smile on. Put it back in the box and there it sits.
I Noticed from a different post Duber123 has one too. It would be fun to see what results others have had with 50-70 handguns.:Fire:

I got a custom Bullberry made with a 1-26" twist, and got mine a little shorter, 6-1/2". A pain to work up safe loads for until I discovered Trailboss. Mine is way more accurate than I had hoped, and with the Trailboss powder, I can get a 435 gr. slug to 950 fps. safely. I have at least 3 different moulds that will stay in 1 inch at 50 yards from the bench, a custom LBT 400 gr. lfn, a 390 gr. full wadcutter I got off E-bag for 18$, and the accuracy champ to my chagrin, is a 16$ Lee. That one has out shot all the rest so far. My barrel is off getting fitted to a new frame with a 1 pound trigger. It really is fun to shoot. Stretch the barrel to 14" or so, and the power goes to a whole different level. I'm happy with mine at "midrange" levels.

That sounds like fun dubber. I need to do more load development. I've got a 500 gr. lee and a couple of custom paper patch moulds @ about 600 gr. I was thinking of trying 777. Using the trail Boss formula and carefuly workin up a load would be fun. Another itch I'd like to scratch is 2400 with the 500 gr lee.[smilie=1:

hey would either of you be interested in a lee .515 SC 450 gr for those cannons? I found it, cast about 30 boolits to try in my muzzleloader( didn't do well). let it go for $20. shipped to your door.PM if interested.

That exact mould is the accuracy champ in my gun. WW's weigh in at 435 grains. The small meplat probably rules it out as a hunting boolit, but it shoots great.

How much does it need to expand if the entrance hole starts at 1/2 inch? Sounds like it would allow a large leak to begin with. And if it is accurate who needs a bigger sledge hammer.

I have about 40- 50 cal bullets cast from an LNIB lyman mold that went to Kodiak1 north of the border. If interested I could mic and weigh to see what they are, I can also look up the mould thread to see which mould it was.

Getting ready to get a 50-90 encore pistol barrel from MGM, probably 17 in. long, would be fun to go buffalo huntin with this round.:drinks:

That should be a good one Buf hunter. Nothin makes a grin like 600 gr. launched @1000 fps from a hand gun.:-D

I'll go back through my notes, and see if I can make any load recommendations, I have quite a few somewhere, I got off Loadata.com, that were developed in a 12" SSK 50-70. Alliant 2400 can get weird in these, and I believe SSK cautions against it. I had some interesting moments with it myself while working up loads for mine. In the longer barrels, power goes WAY up, even at mild pressures. That 50-90 should be all you need with a 17" barrel. I'm betting a 450 at 1,700 would be easy.

bet that would make a neet chambering for a tc carbine with a 16.5 inch barrel. A guy could lob big 50s at about a 1000 fps out of it with very little recoil.

Thats on my to do list Lloyd, I have a 470 gr. LBT mould that I had cut when I did the first shorty 50-70, that I think would be great in a carbine. The short one shot so well, I would probably stick with the 1-26" twist for the rifle. With the big bore, a little carbine would be pretty light and handy.

What about the NEF in 500 S&W? It would be an inexpensive way to get into a 50 cal single shot.
That 6.5" TC barrel sounds like it would be alot of fun and easy to carry. Did the sights have to be soldered on? Seems like there isn't much metal left with a 50 cal hole in a contender barrel. Or is it on an Encore?

Not an Encore, just a regular Contender with a 6-1/2" bbl. The front sight is still screwed on, and still has 4 or 5 threads, no problems. It is light, not much over 3 lbs. as I recall when I weighed it. It is fun.:-D
