Brass shotshells, first try

Well, here is my first try with 00 buck and a 12g brass shotshell from magtech....

Load was taken from a buncha sources.... Consisting of 25gr herco (lite) a lubed 11ga nitro card followed by a 11ga fiber wad, followed by a teflon wrap from bpi into which i placed 9 00 buck pellets, and winchester fiber filler that i stole last year from a bunch of winchester 00 buck loads that were given to me that were too corroded to shoot. To top off the shell, a 11ga overshot card and I swiped some real ugly nail polish from AlaskanGurls stash of ugly nail polish to seal it all up.... I am gunna shoot this first, and if it at least fires, and hits some paper, without killing me or blowing up my bolt gun, i will know that I am on the right track..... Done a ton of research, so i am pretty sure I wont get kilt..

Umm...so far, so good?

Looks like an interesting project. I'm drawn to brass shot shell cases but they don't make sense for me right now. I'll be standing by.

Well, I am gunna shot this one next time i go to the range, along with some roll crimped 410 rb rounds just to see what is what.....

Keep us posted, I'm very interested in how it turns out. My father recently handed me a bunch of once-fired brass Rem UMC Best 12ga shells that he would like reloaded. He would like some to be loaded with slugs so I'm sure that will be an interesting twist to research.

Well, both the 410 rb loads and the brass shotshell loads ran fine... The brass shot shells suffer a bit in preformance due to not having a great gas seal... Really need something plastic in 11 ga wads over powder.... I was hoping that the 11 ga waxed cards would do better, and they did ok.... Just not great....

Not yet sir... I have that as an option though....

I got some 10ga wads that I thought I would try as they fir real snug.... Thought i would try them shooting the 7/8 lee slug and see how that works....

they make a 11ga wad for your use. BPI has them I think Midway may have but they come from BPI

Yea, i like the 10g wads better... They form a better gas seal..

I've been shooting Magtech brass hulls for a couple years in my Stoeger Coach Gun (both barrels reamed to no choke).

My load is :

Magtech 12 GA brass hulls
CCI #300 Large Pistol Primer
80 gr FFg Goex
11 GA overpowder card
11 GA ½" fiber wad
the shotcup from a Winchester WAA12 wad
9 pellets 00 Buck
10 GA overshot card glued with Duco Cement

I also use Rocky Mountain Cartridge 12 GA brass hulls. They're milled and will last a lifetime.

W209 primer
80 gr FFG Goex or 38.0 gr Blue Dot
12 GA overpowder card
12 GA ½" fiber wad
the shotcup from a Winchester WAA12 wad
9 pellets 00 Buck
12 GA overshot card glued with Duco Cement

I've also tried replacing the WAA12 shotcup with a shotcup made from heavy grocery bags
I have a 12 GA brass dowel that I use to form the shotcup.

All cards and fiber wads bought online at Track of the Wolf.

None of the above is very tight patterning, but they'd make good self defense loads.

To clean my barrels after using black powder I run water through them using a plastic nozzle on the garden hose. Speeds things up considerably.

ok guys I plan to punch cut my own wads for 410 I've read that a 7/16" punch works but I think it's sloppy in a brass 410 or 45colt case, I crunched the fractions and found that 29/64 is .453 dia. would reaming the 7/16" punch to 29/64 be good then waxing the edge of the cork wads. also tips on trimming the 9.3x74r brass to 3" roll crimp case length would be great

I used 23 gr. of Herco with 1 1/8 oz of #6. I needed an extra card wad as filler under the shot. I used to give the case mouth a very slight roll crimp to hold the overshot card rather than using a sealer. It worked well enough and opened nicely when fired. In several years of use, I had only one case crack slightly at the mouth. I felt it was more secure than using a sealer.

jimb16 what guage you using 23gr herco in i recently aquired most of a keg of herco so if it works in a 410 im set for a long time

I used 2400 in my 410... And I bet that Jim used 23gr herco in the 12g...

what diameter should I cut my wads 7/16" or 29/64"

I was loading 12 guage shells. Some were original remingtons and others were magtec. For a 67 guage (.410) I would also go with 2400.

Are these thicker brass than the Mag-Tec, and do they use 12ga. Wads and cards? I hope that's the case (pun intended)because finding the right fit for the Mag- Tec was too much of a hassle for me. Keep up the good work, I like the idea of all brass cases.
