Hello folks,

I'd like to mount a scope on my AK variant rifle. It is quiet accurate for a bottom of the barrel stamped rifle.

I bought this rifle to serve as a multi-purpose survival rifle. The scope will be used for ranges of 200yds and less for hunting.

I am not interested in any frills, just a basic good quality scope. This is the only rifle I own and I don't plan on having another rifle for a long time, so what I get needs to be of good quality. This is what I'm currently looking at:

This is the set-up I'm interested in using. It would seem that all 3 items have excellent reviews.

Based on hunting experience May I suggest a lower power range on your scope? I have come to love 1.5 or 2-7 or so- good field of view at lower power (= easier to find the target in the scope!) and given that the 7.62x39 is a little limited out beyond 150yds the high end need not be all that high... Just my $.02 worth. Lastly, most AKs don't group real well at those distances...

I also would suggest a bit lower powered scope for the AK variant. I would suggest a fixed 2.5X, the best quality you can afford. Lot's of banging to and fro on an AK for a scope. Unless designed and/or built for such an AK can rattle a scope lose in no time.

Yes I will agree the on a lower power. I've done a bit of scope research since I posted.

My hope is to have a good cast boolit handload that will perform better than the normal Russian surplus. These loads will be used only when greater distances and more precision is needed. I'll leave the scope off for normal ak type work. I'm going to cruise the 2.5x fixed scopes and see what I can come up with. I'll post what I find. Thanks

I'm noticing that looking for something less than a 4x leads to a lot of red dot optics. I may need to open my mind other alternatives.

These are really nice scopes, had one on one of my AKs. The POSP 4X.

However, I found hat I could shoot just as accurately without any scope on my stamped AKs. I think here is just too much side flex in the sheet metal receiver to support a scope. The scope adds a lot of weight and bulk too, detracting much of what I like about the rifles.

I looked at the POSP and was very interested. I liked the fact that it is made for the AK rifles. After doing some research I determined that magnification probably wasn't needed for the majority of long-ranged shots that I am likely to encounter. I decided to spend the extra bucks and go with an Aimpoint PRO. All of the reviews I've read on it have been stellar. Hunters seem to be very happy with them despite the lack of magnification.

I've never used a red dot sight, but it would appear that they are a significant advantage in quick sight acquisition during tactical situations. To me, this rifle is like a fire extinguisher. I have no plans to use it, but I want it near by and in top-quality condition IF I find myself depending on it.

If you have any experience with this optic, let me know what to expect... here is a link.

There are a bunch of lower power scope options that will work other than red dots.
I love my Aimpoint but find I am much more accurate with a scope than a dot sight.
On the other hand it is faster to put a quick shot resonably accurately with a dot.

If you're looking for a bit more accuracy, go with a 2.5 to 4X scope, not a red dot. Red dots are designed for speed, not accuracy and can get expensive. If you're having trouble finding low power scopes on the internet, then go to midwayusa, opticsplanet and swfa. You can find what you're looking for on their websites, then google a specific model to do more research.

For what you're talking about, I would look hard at a short, single power, quality scope with a simple duplex reticle. Don't get caught up in all the tactical hoo haw and it shouldn't be very expensive. Note: Read the reviews and you'll have a good idea of a scope's capabilities for your application. Don't get too caught up in a single negative review or a too bright positive review. Instead, read all the reviews so you get as much information as you can. I got my Aimpoint PRO and UTG quick detachable mount today. The quality of both seem to be outstanding. I can't wait to take it to the range.

An interesting thing I noticed was that there is some minor flex on the rifle end of the mount. I suppose I should have expected that considering its just stamped metal. I'm thinking that a scope probably wouldn't be able to live to its potential with the flex, but I don't think a red dot sight would care too much.

That is a nice scope. I will keep this recommendation in mind for when I get a bolt rifle.
