Anybody have much experience with this round. I'm looking to order a C-Sharps High Wall in this caliber. 28 or 30 inch barrel with a 16 twist, single set trigger, and set up with an MVA scope. Basically going to be a BPCRS gun and used occasionally for hunting. Most likely won't be used beyond 600yds.
Jump in here, I'd like to hear all pros and cons on any or all of the above.

Thanks
Bob

A good cartridge but I was talking to Doc Carlson the other day and he said if he were to do it again he would just go with 40-65. Less expense and shoots just as good.

I currently am shooting a 40-65, but no set trigger and 18 twist. Was thinking that the 40SS would give a little more powder capacity. I have tried a lot of boolits in the 400gr area and can't get them to shoot very well. The original mold was an RCBS 350gr and that shoots the best in it, but gets blown around a bit in the wind.

Hi

Are you planning to knock big things down at 600 yards? If so you may need a bit more black powder than the -65 or -70 cases allow.

I had a 40-70 SS on an original High Wall, Snover barrel 1-17 twist.
shot some of the best scores ever. This is before swiss, 63-65 gr CTG, 430gr Loos bullet, Mathews lube or SPG, poly wad.

When I first got the gun from my friend who couldn't shoot Sil any longer, he left me about 40 rounds to play with, my friend Tim who is a lot better shot than me put 9 shots in a less than 1" at 200yds, I have a hard time shooting 3-4" groups with iron sights. we could never duplicate the load, getting 2" groups after that.

The brass was made from 9.3 x 74R Norma brass, .80 a piece at the time.

Make sure the chamber is set up for Hornady 405 win brass.
easy enough to trim down, and if it's not enough powder, punch the chamber to full 405 aka 40-72 win. or do it right from the start.

Do you shoot at Cannonsburg? if so might see you there this Summer.

Just Rams, the steel kind. Wouldn't even consider game of any size at that distance if that was what you meant. My comfort zone with live stuff is 200 or less with BP, even though I have burned a lot of powder and lead on 300yd pigs. For me there is a moral obligation to kill cleanly.

Hi

I certainly won't argue with any of that.

The heavier (read 400+ gr) bullets might require a faster twist, like 1 in 14". For the rest, I don't believe you can't go wrong... Unless you want a really 'custom rifle', then there is always the 40-90 What Cheer, 500gr bullet in front of 90gr of black - would require at least a 14" twist, and could do with an even faster twist...

Hi

There's a 45-120 rifle sitting over at a local store. It's been there for at least two years as far as I can see. We don't seem to hunt a lot of Buffalo at 800+ yards in PA any more ...

Hi

It's sitting over at the Cabela's in Hamburg PA. They have about a $1800 price tag on it. I believe it's a Pedersoli Sharps. I'll be headed over there later this week if you are looking for a more exact description.

Chuck, not sure where Cannonsburg is at, so no. Mostly been shooting at Cincinnati Miami Rifle and Pistol Club. Thinking about doing Friendship a little more this year. To many hobbies, not enough weekends to go around.
CSA uses a stretched 30-40 to make their 40SS, but I think that you can get either. Another possible option is the 40-82 Crossno for a big increase in powder. And I have a 40-82 Winny 86 with a fair amount of brass. I'm not really looking to kicked into the middle of next week though. I'm not terribly recoil sensitive but see no reason to use a lot more than I need, and I like 40s.

Gert, most of the guys here go for a 16 twist for the heavier 40s. Several guys I know use an 18 twist with the 400gr boolits but I have had 0 luck with anything past a 360gr that is 1.163". I have tried a bunch of different 390 to 465 boolits with it and never got a group as good as the original mold that I bought with the rifle in 91'.
I'm not sure the 40-90 What Cheer would be legal for BPCRS. And going for a 500gr boolit I would be better off just getting a 45-70 or 45-90. Brass would be easy and somewhat less expensive to get. All of that being said, it would be a fun rifle in a Martini though.:drinks:

Looks interesting. Pretty long haul for me though. not as long as you. In the last century I used to shoot IPSC over in Ashland, not far from that range.

Thanks
