Rx7 is good stuff for cast boolit shooting. It really shines in .45-70 and .308 Win. It is my 'go-to" powder with 280 grain slugs in my .35 Whelen AI for velocity and accuracy

YEP, a few days ago I loaded some 222 test loads with Rx7.
it's been to cold to test them yet.

Being that SR4759 is being discontinued, I'm thinking about switching to RL7 for use in my 14" T/C 30-30 with a RCBS 165gr sil.I use 18.5gr of 4759 and it shoots great. That 's my load for IHMSA silhouettes. Any recommendations for a decent start load with RL7?

35 Rem, 375 Win, and 45-70 Govt really shine with this powder using my boolits and guns. It's not my go-to powder but maybe it should be, I keep winding up there. I even loaded up some rounds with it for my 32-20.

When I used to shoot a .308 from the bench Reloder seven was my favorite powder . Sorry to say I haven't tried it in very many other cartridges except for my woodchuck rifle with sierra soft points .

Alliant lists 23.5 grains as maximum under a 170 grain Remington Corelokt in their silhouette section. I'd have no problem starting 21 grains under the RCBS boolit. FYI, they claim the 23.5 load at 1,800 fps from a 14" barrel.

ETA: The RCBS Cast Bullet Manual lists 24.0 start and 26.0 maximum for the 308-165-SIL in the pistol section. The current Lyman Cast Bullet Handbook lists even higher maximums for similar boolits. Looks like the Alliant data is very conservative.

My favorite propellant. I use it all of my 30cal. It's a little slower than 2400 but lights as good.

I never shot any R7, but I use SR 4759 in all my bottle neck cast rounds , is R7 bulky like 4759 ? I like the way 4759 fills the case, I've been pondering on trying some R7 myself.

RL7 is a short cut extruded powder. Not especially bulky.

Thanks that's what I was looking , I'm not the OP but thanks for this thread & replies - all good info . A silly wet shooter from Md. he uses RL7 in his XP 7BR with cast, he told me it was good stuff he said it wasn't temp. sensitive either . I might have to get a bottle .

Good in 222 to 45-70 for me. I don't recall if I tried it in 22 Hornet, but wouldn't be surprised if it works good there.

Last I checked Reloder 7 is made in Sweden by Bofors for Alliant.

Reloader No.7 is one of the best powders for cast bullet loads in 30-30 Win, 308 Win, and 30-06 Springfield. It fills over half of the case, meters like sugar, and burns clean.

I tried some 223 Rem loads with it for my AR15. At maximum listed listed powder charge it would not cycle the AR15 action. I am sure that load would work fine I a 223 Rem bolt-rifle.

Alliant of late seems to be pushing its new powders and publishes very little data for the old favorites in the free guides.

RL 7 is my favorite 45/70 powder. I load to the "marlin max" with a 300 gr fp gas check bullet and all the bullet holes touch at 100 yards, and it HAMMERS whatever it hits. It, uh, does get a little...energetic...behind the Guide Gun, too, but, with a limbsaver recoil pad, the bruises are hardly noticeable.

S Mac.....RX7 is the abbreviation Lyman uses in their loading manuals for Alliant Reloder 7. Lyman explains this in the description they give of the powder in the "powder" chapter, which they assume one will read before proceeding to using the loading data.

Any Help sure appreciated.

I find it interesting that the IMR SR series of powders are "scheduled" for discontinuation this year while at the same time they are featured on:

http://www.imrpowder.com/shotpist.html

Funny how rumors get started to jack up interests... I know where 3 brand new 8-pound jugs of 4756 sit on a retailer's shelf for a "measly" $175 each price tag.

There's so much BS in the wind these days that no one is interested in the truth.

MJ

P.S. Regarding Reloder 7 data here's a pretty good source (the link goes to 308W data):

My favourite smokeless powder for the 45-70, I can load heavy in an 1886 or load moderate and get excellent accuracy out of a Sharps. Theres neat experimenters using it for heavy loads with pistol caliber lever actions.

I have been using RL-7 since it became available , in a lot of rifles and contenders, with great success , 30/30, 308, 38/55
45/70 , 223 , 243 ,25/06 ,works well in a lot of cal. in my experience , I have been able to find very accurate loads for the Cal. I shoot.
There is a lot of loading info on this powder out there , if you look in the right places. Wolf Publishing Co. has a site that you can access , www.riflemagazine.com. This is the home site for Rifle Mag. and Handloader mag. They have quite a bit of information on cast boolits in about any cal. you desire and they show RL-7 in quite a few. This is a very informative site for rifle, pistol, loads w/lots of powders. You can subscribe to the site and use all of their info.....worth the money IMHO.

RL-7 is quite a good powder IMHO...:redneck::2gunsfiring_v1:

Got this afternoon with the 7-08 Striker not a steller group but was off my back pack rested on a stump in the woods , with only cranking off 10 rounds I can say I really like this powder. I found it clean burning and meters like sand . I'll load some more up for this thing and I loaded some this morning for the 308 and I'll get to the range for better testing

I'd be glad to but they didn't work well in the rifle or revolver, possibly just didn't like the Lee 314-90 boolit. I used 13.4 grs (accuracy load from Lyman's CBH) and it didn't shoot well in the 92 and had lots of unburned powder in the SAA revolver. NOE just made a few 314008 moulds and one is on it's way to me soon.

I'm using a Accurate Mold from Tom at 120gr in the 10" TC tube. A real tack driver too. I've heard of others using RL7 but it's position on the burn charts has kind of steered me away. Other powders prob will work better but I'm running low on the others and have 2lb of RL7 I use for the 45-70. Thanks for the reply. The pistol powders do work better in the revolvers....especially with the 90ish grain stuff.

I'm hoping to use one load for both rifle and revolvers. I have a shooting buddy who is convinced that his 100 yr old rifles and revolvers in 38-40, 44 Colt & 44-40 among others shoot best with Holy Black. I'm unable to prove him wrong so will have to give it a try since there's plenty of KIK FFFg around here. I'll have a .313 sizer coming for my Lyman soon and the Lyman is loaded with SPG so it might just happen in the next few weeks.
I'll save my precious Rx7 for catridges that appreciate it.

For your .32-20 plinkers, I have had good luck with 3gr of Bullseye, 231, and HP38. For a tad warmer load with my 120gr cast bullets I use 6gr of AA7. That load may be a little stiff for older guns. Remember I shoot these in a 10" T/C. For an absolutely rocking load IN A T/C ONLY, I use 15gr of H110 with a .308 110gr varmint bullet on top. For some reason the T/C LOVES cast bullets sized to .312 even though it is a .308 bore. Go figure.

I found the bfr 45/70 didn't do well with conventional rifle powders and I really found RL7 to perform well when I had this revolver.

be carefull with the manual from Lyman in the RL-7 section for the max loads for the 308 winchester. I would approach these loads very cautiously as the max rifle load for this round nearly gave me a very bad experience with my Remington 700 heavy barrel. I still think it is the load from the manual but at the very least I would caution anybody on the MAX loads for the 308 Winchester and RL-7 powder ...

in the Lyman book ... RX-7 is the same as RL-7 ... can't figure why they did the X thing but it is the same Aliant powder.
