I'm scoping a shotgun for heavy slug loads and the recoil is substantial. what mid-price brand can take the pounding and stay true? a fixed 4x or so. Thanks, Hal

Bushnell banner makes a shotgun scope that has held up well on me and is reasonably priced. I don't need a $2,000 scope for a 50BMG on a single barrel break action slug gun.

For less expensive scopes; I have had great luck with the Weaver 1-3x's....... 1 is on a 1187 12 ga slug, 1 on a Rem M SEVEN KS in 350 Rem Mag (with scope 6 lbs 4 ozs) and another is on a Rem M Seven in a 416 Wildcat ( 6.5 lbs -- 400 gr @ 2,250 fps) with no issues. All mounted on above average recoiling guns. I just swapped the 1-3X on the 416 with a Leupold VX-3 1.5-5x and put the Weaver on a Rem 870 20 ga slug gun. At the same power setting in a side by side comparison not too much difference in clarity / light transmisson between the two. This was done on a dull cloudy day last week at about 3:00 PM. I did compare the 1-3x Weaver with a Leupold VX-3 2.5-8x one hour before sunrise while deer hunting this winter, the Leupold was brighter. However, I could make out wood fence posts (3 to 4" dia) at 200 yds with the Weaver a full 1/2 hour before legal shooting hours (legal is 1/2 hr before sunrise). The Leupold is more than double the cost of the Weaver.

I have a new Weaver K6 on a Pre-64 Model 70 in .300 H&H magnum that is doing just fine. Just thought I would try it, as it had an older steel tube Weaver K6 on it that gave up after a lot of years of shooting. Sort of a nastalgia thing for me on this rifle, but Weaver seems to be a strong scope nowadays, if this K6 is any indication. A K4 or less would be good for a slug gun.

I do own and trust Leupold scopes, but as MarkP said, they can be pricey.

Yes sir, those slug loads can be pretty "snappy" as to recoil.

if you can find the 2-7x33 Refield Revenge is hard to beat. the revolution is **** in comparison.

Also Cabela's has their own line of slug scope

The lighter the weight and simpler the design the better. You don't need a real expensive scope. A small fixed or low power variable is a best choice. Stay away from the 40 and 50 MM lenses. The inertia of the recoil is what breaks the scopes. Less weight=less inertia. I have a 4X Simmons and a 4X Bushnell on my two slug guns.
