I have been watching armslist for 22 hornet rifles, I would like one. I especially would like a falling block or perhaps a break action. But every falling block I see is $800-900 and up! Is this just the way it is, or would it be possible to find one for $250-400? I dont need a collectors gun, I want to shoot it! What are all the companies who make this style in 22 Hornet?

Check ans see if "Handi-rifle" offers one in 22 H, if they do be sure to check the twist, as most rifles use either a 1-14 or 1-16 twist, limiting you to the lighter "J" and cast 22 Cal. bullets. You might find a Thompson Center Encore with a 22 H barrel , if so it will have a 1-12 twist. There is also the option of going with a 222 or 223 Rem. chambering and loading it light to equal Hornet velocity.

I have a 22 hornet Handi that I am starting to test out some cast loads with the lee Bator 55 gr mold. I am hi-tek coating and getting no leading in the 1800 fps range. The gas check helps with accuracy. Much more testing to do, but planting time is here.

In your stated price range, your options these days are the Handi rifle, or an old Savage 219, if you can find one. If you have a Contender frame, a 22 hornet carbine barrel could be had for $250 or so.

Between the Handi and Savage 219, which is to be the better gun?

Haven't tries a Savage but my Handi .22 Hornet was deadly on coyotes out to 200 yds with factory ammo. The earlier models ejected the empties about 20 feet behind you so I learned to eject them into my chest so I could find them.

The 219 has better lines and is hammerless. The Handi has a hammer, is already D&T for scope a mount, is still being made and parts should be readily available (and is probably cheaper).

I have a Ruger #3 in 22 hornet, they haven't been made for a while, so are kinda scarce, but they should be less than $800.

Sounds like Savage would be better quality and hold value better. But for this poor country boy Handi sounds pretty good. Especially if it's accurate to 200 yds.

I have the Browning Low wall in .22 Hornet. It is a beautiful little rifle, and a somewhat picky eater. It likes the Nosler 40 gr ballistic tip with a max charge of Lil Gun powder. If you can find one they are nice rifles just don't give up on it too soon.

I have been looking for a single shot .22hornet, too. Ran into the same off-the-charts pricing. Best I could find was a Sav. 219 in K Hornet for $400. Too rich for me and it disappeared.

I've been looking one of the short-lived Sav. 40 single shot bolt actions. But no luck there either.

Wildcat, improved Hornet K stands for Kilborne (sp.) Case blown out straight, shoulder moved forward. Some claim it improves case life. It has greater capacity so ballistics are improved.

Current Handis are 1 in 12" twist, so you should be good to go thru 55gr bullets. Mine is 1983 production so is 16", it loves a 40gr j-word ahead of a stiff charge of A1680. My humble opinion is that you would really enjoy a Handi, they are reasonably priced, American made, and service is great if needed. Plus there is a ton of info to be found over on the graybeard site under the Handi/NEF forums. GW

If you can find a Martini action they make great Hornet rifles. I'd go K-Hornet though.

I jumped on one of those "Mini Mauer's" (SP) that were by Chas Daily for a year or so before Remington bought them out. Also bought the supposed correct scope mounts, but they haven't let me line up the scope yet. Sized accordingly for a Hornet cartage thought. VERY nice to look at. Selling off cows and building gun room for back section of the barn to shoot on my range. Will concentrate on fun stuff in retirement years.

Its pretty hard to beat a Contender carbine in 22 Hornet. Everyone needs to own at least one .

I think it is regular Hornet, didn't see anything about K. It's at $160 with 3 days left, sounds like a better deal to find it on a gun already!

I lucked into a Martini in 22K Hornet; fantastic little rifle; shoots great with Privi Partizan factory or several different lead bullet handloads.

I've owned both (don't have either one right now) and my opinion is that the 219 is a better rifle. My Handi was one of the newer ones with the faster twist.

At the Wells gunshow today, a seller had a new looking CZ 110 (single shot break-open) in 22 hornet. hang tag said, $325. and the seller was begging me to make an offer...I didn't make an offer. I didn't need another Hornet, and the stock was god-awful plain.

Handis are less than $300, if you have an sb2 action, it will cost about $160 to get a factory .22 Hornet barrel fitted.
If you buy one on ebay, you may have to do some fitting to get the proper headspace.

An alternative might be a Savage 340 bolt gun in .222 Remington. They also exist in Hornet, but those are rare. The .222 is very easy to load down to Hornet velocities using Red Dot or Blue Dot.

I believe the current H&R .22 Hornets are rifled at 1/9". Mine is and it's at least 5 years old. I rechambered it to K Hornet using a $5 rental reamer from Greybeard's using hand power only. Slow going but easy enough to do a good job. Another setup worth looking at is the .223 Superlight Handi. Comes with adjustable sights, is truly "handy", (very light and compact) and can be loaded down to rimfire country.

Yep - today, even the #3's in a chambering other than .45-70 are bringing $1K..............

There's a Hornet chambered Savage 340 on Gunbroker now. Scoped with an old steel Weaver. Buy it. please, before I succumb!

Good show. Check to see that the recoil lug is not bottoming in the stock mortise. Relieve it if it is. Then get a bit of Red Dot powder into stock. Four grains Red Dot and a 35 or 40 grain "Hornet" j-wart is a .22 Rimfire Magnum shootalike, and very accurate in mine. 4 grains with a 45 grain GC boolit cast hard will do well. Use pistol primers to avoid shoulder setback with those light loads. Go up to 6 grains and you've duplicated the 2400 fps Hornet, while still in a nice safe pressure range. Brass will last forever. Lots of full-house .222 loads in the literature that leave the Hornet in the dust, too. With those reduced loads in my reportoire, I have no need for the Hornet. (Want is another matter...)

Should add that Unique, Green Dot, Blue Dot, Herco, almost anything in that speed range would work for reduced loads and/or boolits, if that's what you have. I use Red Dot and Blue Dot because I have plenty in stock.
